full time (4FT) can be used on pavement, and part (4HI and 4LO) time can not. the full time transfer case has another differential in the TC which allows the front wheels to spin at different speeds than the rear wheels. this happens when turning. full time is not that great off road because if you get stuck enough, you can stop both front, or both rear wheels from spinning which could leave you stranded. part time has no diff in the TC, and the front and rear DS are locked together. part time needs to be used on slick surfaces because binding can occur if its not and breakage can occur. the 242 ranges from 2HI, N, to 4FT to 4HI and 4LO. the 231 only has 2HI, 4HI, N and 4LO. make sense?

You can still use the 242 case and have the versatility of PT and FT, the downside is its a weaker case by about 50 ft/lbs if i remember, and you cant put a HD SYE on it, only a hack n tap is available for it. Also if it matters, its heavier and takes more fluid

the np231 or nv231 t case looking at it from the back, to the left of the output shaft directly in back of the front output has a raised circle with 16 fins on it, the nv242 only has 8 fins. i have absolutely no idea why i know this or how i found out. but i had a 242 and it worked fine, i like the sye for it it has a big flange instead of a yoke that attatches it.

Im surprised nobody has questioned why it is you bought a mystery TC? usually you buy a TC knowing exactly what you need and exactly what it is that you are buying...

Do you mean directly behind the front drive shaft output yoke? Its a raised circle about 2 inch in diamater? If so, I have 8 fins that are built into the cast around that. Looks like a 242 then. Sounds good, a little easier to swap into my ZJ.
