someone in mass is selling a dana 35 tru-lock for 3.55 gears for $100.
1) what is it (is it like a arb locker)? 2) would it be a good deal for my zj. 3) what benefits would i get. 4) how hard to install, and who is going to volunteer to help if i get it? ;D

Tru-lock? My guess is that its a trac-lock limited slip differential or a detroit true-trac limited slip. The trac lock comes from the factory and is clutch driven which can wear out. The detroit truetrac is aftermarket and is gear driven, so nothing will wear out. Limited slips give more traction to the wheel thats not slipping, so its better than an open differential. Its not quite as great as a locker offroad, but is almost invisible on-road.

yeah, its the clutch one. trac-lock. he had it on a 87yj for 2 years. so it wears out? is it worth 100 bucks? and its already 2yrs old i wonder how long it will last?

I say save the $100 and put it towards a Lock Right or an axle upgrade. but thats just my .02$

don't get it...it will have to be set up by a professional. you need to set the backlash for the gears since its a new carrier and if you are off my 1/100 of an in you can kiss your rearend goodbye

I will step in and say no dont get it also. Those Trash-Locks are crap. They have clutches in them that when one wheel spins it heats up all the limited slip additive and that applies pressure to the clutches in the clutch pack. The friction makes them grab each other, thus "locking" or transfering the power to the non spinning wheel. The clutches wear out eventully, and can only be replaced by getting a new case (carrier)
Matt is right, you need to set pinion depth, measure backlask (.005-.008), and get a good tooth pattern. If the pattern isnt good its back to measuring.
I would never buy a used carrier because they could have taken it out for a rear end noise. It could have a bad case run-out. All driveline stuff that involves measuring I would buy new.

You are better off buying a lock-rite or aussi locker. I paid 274 for my Aussi locker shipped, and I believe the lock-rite is similar. Save up and spend the extra 175 and get a real locker. You will not regret it in the end. Though if you are thinking of an axle upgrade, stick it out do the axle and then buy a locker, no sense in buying two.

save some cash and build a 8.8 or D44 for the ZJ!

my wife drives it more than i do. so i need to keep the anti-lock brackes. so i think changing diffs and keeping the abs is impossible, or just to expensive.

to tell you the truth mine stops better without the abs. when i put the 8.8 in and changed from rear drums to disk it stops like a car. you probably have disks in the rear anyway b/c your is a 96+, but if you read up on JU and nagca and mallcrawlin.com boards most people say the abs is crap and will work just as good if not better without it. my 3cents
