Passenger lower is going. I figured I'd just replace both upper and lower on both sides at the same time. Pretty much just press in and out like a u-joint with the rental tool from NAPA, right?

Make sure you get good joints, sometimes they sell "undersized" ones at auto places which are cheaper. They last about 6 months.

Well, looks like I won't need to do it after all. Jeep's going back to the dealer next week. When they replaced the pinion bearing under warranty, they pushed out one of the axle seals. So next week they replace both axle seals in front (free) and I'll provide my own ball joints (Moog). They'll install the ball joints and only charge 1 hr per side labor cause it will already be mostly apart. Sounds reasonable to me.

yea that sounds decent though their 1 hr labor is how much 98$ ?

First set of Balljoints I did was on Muddog's cherokee, they were a b**** and a half and we ran through almost a case while doing the job. Second set was on my cherokee, the joints came off with a standard 1/2inch drive ratchet and no breaker bar, piece of cake. Third set was equally easy, I'd think on a rubi they wouldent be bad. Still for $200 its easier to have them do it.

well in the case of muddog's jeep we kinda screwed up and tighted the press in the wrong direction . . . I think, it gets hazy after a while.

i'll do it for you for 100 bucks a side, If they have been in there since the age of time than you will have a prob using the press tool from Napa, I usually burn a hole on the back of the joint(where the zerk is) and heat the bag out of the knuckle and air hammer it right out, where a mask or do it outside though because boiling joint grease STINKS. have the new joint there and handy to drop in while the knuckles still hot. whala!

Modern D30/44 jeep ball joints are easy compared to what it takes to do older axles, so quit yer bitchin.. PS did my wifes blazer this summer, riveted ball joints suck way more than pressed ones.
