Has anyone changed one on a YJ that may have some tips??
I think itr is the gear box? The steering wheel still turns easy but you have to turn the steering wheel a lot more to get the tires to turn. More so on a left hand turn than right hand turn.
About how long will this job take??

are you sure its not play in the front end components(tie rods draglink etc)?

If its like a TJ its a really easy job probably take an hour and a half at most.

three bolts and a steering shaft clamp.....and a drag link bolt

I am pretty sure it is the gear box. At a stand still I can not get the wheels to peg to the left. In fact it takes a hole turn on the steering wheel to get just a little turn on the wheels. At the same time the steeling wheel is still pretty easy to turn. SO I know it is not the pump.
I bought a new can of BP Blast just for this job. I have been spraying the bolts and pitman arm for a couple of days.

its not the nut that will give you the problem..your going to need a puller to get the arm off..

If you need help wrenching, as always I am willing to help out, second.. get a good Pitman arm puller. It is not hard to do with the proper tools, I accually found getting the nut off to me harder on my jeep. But I broke 3 pitman arms when doing Conroys lift, and all three were autozone cheapo's.. If you are going to lift it, I would wait till them to do it, your gonna have to change the pitman arm anyways, might as well do it once, and put the dropped arm on the new stearing box right off the bat. (when the lift is also put in)

Help!!!! I have pitman puller. I cn not for the life of me get the nut off. I have broken a braker bar already, tried another braker bar with a 3' pipe on it, I tried a impact wrench, and I tried heating it with a torch.
My next step is cutting it and i have ordered a new nut in case I do that.
And no John I have not had my funeral yet. Oct 9th

Well, I got the nut off. The braker bar and pipe I was using look like it was going to brake too but it did not. Now the pitman and I thinnk I am maxing out the puller.

welcome to the club i broke 3 pitman arm pullers last time i tried. I ended up just cutting the pitman arm off the steering box.
then when i swaped steering boxes i couldnt get the pitman arm off the one i was putting in so i just left the stock one in instead of using my drop pitman arm.

so fare i havent had a nut no brake free with that gun..best 350 i ever spent on a tool.. did you heat the nut with Oxy/asetulan,, you have to get the nut good and red not so much its melting..

I am going to have another go at it on Fri. after work I will let you know how things go. I did heat it up but not to the point of red. it was pretty close.
I do not inderstand why the pitman and nut have ot be so tight. I do not think there is that much force there? I think it is a little over kill don't you think?

its not that tight..its the years of being on there with out moving...with a small flame heat the nut around the shaft, focuings the hear more into the nut.
