Its time to look into lockers and gears.
i want selectable lockers and 4.88's. i have a Dana 44 and a Dana 30. what are the spline counts? what do i need to know when i go to get prices on installation and parts?
I figure I'll get the gears and lockers done at the same time. Any ballpark figures for how much they are going to cost me?

selectable lockers are expensive! But nice if you can afford them
ARBs front and rear - $1400 ARB air compressor- $250 4.88 Gears front and rear $300-400 Master install kits f/r- $150 Labor $250 per axle (at least)
So thats what, $2600? You could get a powertrax no-slip rear locker, a lock right up front, and no compressor for $900 cheaper, and save on labor, and have a pretty streetable jeep (except in the snow). You sure are lucky you dont have the d35.

Thanks, when you put it in that perspective it looks different. Goal: eventually this Jeep will just be used on weekends to go to the beach and trail rides. So it has to be streetable. Could I still lock up the rear and cruise it on nice sunny days? What is the difference in the LockRights, Powertrax, and Detroits?

Detroit= full locker, replaces the the carrier Lock-rite & powertrax= just replaces the spider gears I driv emy xj with no real issues on the street, in fact i only sometimes hear the clicking noise when turning, in the sonw in 4wd it is another story. sometimes a little unnerving

the lock right and no-slip are both made by powertrax, the no-slip is supposedly the quietest and best mannered automatic locker on the street. The lock right is noisier and a little weaker than the no-slip. These lockers are cheap and easy to install but arent nearly as strong as a full carrier locker, like a detroit or an arb. Also, if you do lock the front, you will not notice any loss in street manners as long as you are in 2wd.

its gonna cost around 3g's for f/r arb's and 4.88s installed...i spent 2g's on my rear arb and gears. but trust me its worth every penny. ;D

As for spline count, the D44 is a 30 spline shaft and the D30 is 27 spline shaft. but... in 95 they changed the front ends on jeeps, they went from the vunerable 260 U -joint to the 297X which you have. so your front end, minus the spline count is almost as strong as a stock D44 (same u-joint) A good upgrade (and cheap) to your jeep would be source the D30 out of a 96+ XJ, it will be a complete bolt in application, and will convert your front end to a high pinion, where yours is a low pinion. better drive line angles, less loss of parasitic (sp) friction which will rob you of some power, and you will not loose those big ol' u joints!
If you do this and then decide to the gear and stuff, most shops will charge a lot less if the axle is not in the jeep, cause they can work it on the bench, and is less hassle! so you can have your axle built, and still drive. then you jeep will be in the shop to get the rear done, but saves you a little cash!
Start out and lock only the front!

That is providing you can flex and keep those shoes on the ground. Id listen to the jeep god. If his jeep cant climb it or flex it nothing can. Ive seen that monster flex on a three foot rock and climb ledges xj's and tj's cant.. And those detroits will outlast your jeep.. good stuff
