iv been working on my brothers jeep all day (97 XJ) he failed inspection due to bad u-joints and a bad cat. I ordered the cat, im working on the u-joints. Iv done this many many times and have never seen a jeep with a front end this rusted. For some strange reason i was able to get the axle nuts off on both sides...but the unit hub bolts..wow, never seen anything like this. On one side i had to use a mini sledge on a 12" breaker bar the entire time to get all three out. On th eother side same thing except for one which would not budge. I tried heating it etc..its soaked in PB..no luck finally took a 3 foot breaker bar to it with a pipe and go figure the f*** thing broke.
Iv never broken one of thse bolts off, any sugestions? i guess ill just say he needs a new hub? i sure as hell dont feel like drilling th eold one out.

When I bought my jeep, It had 85K on it, and the original U joints were in there, I understand your problem.. I used a 3/4" impact gun I borrowed from a mechanic friend, puts out like a gizzilion ft lb's. ( I had to turn the compressor up to 175 psi) Came right off.
Also to get the caps out of the shaft, I had to use a torch to heat them up nice and hot.

when s*** is that hard to get off thats when i bring it to my mechanic and lket him deal with the damn things.

F that the mechanic wanted $600 to do the u-joints and cat, even with new hubs, which i just scored for $300 (Timkins!) and a $120 cat, im still saving him $180. Plus I know for a fact the shop would have had to replace both hubs too, so who knows how much they would have wanted.
The only reason i will ever go to a mechanic is if i need serious engine or tranny work, and even then ill think twice, and more than likely just replace either of ther two.

well the one that was a biotch ended up breaking, and both hubs would not come off by any conventional way(non damaging) so i ended up having to beat them off anyways. just had to buy one new bolt. The auto zone guy gave me a deal because the old warrenty on one of my hubs had just expired two days ago so he gave me $75 off each timken hub. So my brother paid $300 for a $440 set of hubs, not abad deal.

not a bad deal just sucks that it is giving you this much trouble. my 2000 was rusted real bad and gave me a hell of a time getting any bolts off. i broke more than i thought i would. even my brake rotors were seized on

Whenever I cant get a bolt off I usually pay mechanic an Hr's worth of labor to heat bolts off & saves me lots o frustration

If you use a hub bolt, and an airhammer from the back side of the hub they come off without damaging it.
Last Hub bolts I had to buy cost 9.50 a piece at the dealer.

Cost me $3.30 at the hardware store, its a metric 8.8 M12 X 1.74 maybe 3.5-4" long

I guess i'm just caucious, I would never replace a hub bolt with one thats not tapered like the stock ones.
