you can never have too low of gears in my opinion...if your rpms are getting too high your tires are just too small True dat...true dat, I appologize I thought the truck was your DD and the TJ was your trail toy.

no the tj's almost all stock. i was gonna build truck and sell it to fund my next project jeep, but i like it to much now. who knows you could see the chevy on the trail someday

got the gears yesterday, ill take some pics today, i have 6 hours into this total, and it is all mocked up. need to adj shim on pinion bearing and re-assemble. im figuring 10 hours total, that is removing axle from truck as well. this was my first time doing this and it was not that hard. if i had a second set of hands it would have went faster. i did this with minimal "specialty tools" the only thing i really needed was a dial indicator wich i borrowed. all this takes is time and making sure you pay attention. re-assembly 1st installed new pinion bearing races. used old races to pound them in with a block(used wood so you dont f-up the new races if you miss. took original pinion bearing(inner) used drill press and a small grinder wheel and ground down inside of race to use as a mock up bearing.if you have to re-shim this makes it easy it just slides on and off. re- installed new pinion with mock up bearings put on yoke. if you have 2 people this would have been easier. hold pinion and tap yoke on to start nut. DO NOT put on crush sleeve. tighten until pinion bearings make contact with races then adj so it has slight drag. install carrier with ring gear, use original shim measurements. tighten caps and check backlash. mine was tight so it was too close to pinion, re-adj shim and my backlash was .007 specs for a 12 bolt are .006-.010 so this is fine. i now have my back lash. paint gears and rotate in each direction, you want a oval pattern centered on the drive and coast side of ring gear. check www.differentials.com for specs and pattern sheets this is a great website. mine showed pinion was a little shallow but my backlash was good marks were centered. thats were i ended at 1130 last nite. as soon as the wifey and boy wakes up back to the hammerin. i believe if you posess any mechanical ability at all and have patients to follow every step there is no reason you cannot do this. i feared doing gears cause everyone always said they were impossible without drivetrain specific tools. if i had to buy the tools it would have been about 80.00 for dial indicater with mag base and arms.

the 35's are for the stock look. i want toyo mt 37*14.5 on it when i get more $$$$$$$ thanks to the beer you dropped off i now have a stripped pinion nut. next time i wont start drinking until after noon. hopefully i can make it to boneyard today.

finished gears, no pics. its hard to drink, yell, swear, throw things, and take pics at same time. re-assembly was a little frustrating, no shop press, stripped pinion nut...... managed to get back together, gear mesh was good. my pattern came out fine on my 2nd pinion shim. first try was stock shims. a press would have been nice. do you like your bearings baked? or grilled? i grilled mine. started up the bbq through the bearings on for 20 min per side they almost slid on the carrier. pinion diffrent story, heat, torch ,1 broken hammer, 1 broken 5# sledge. got it though. lift blocks make great seating tools. i was so tired i had to wait till sunday afternoon to put on crush sleeve, i didnt have enough strength to crush it. but all i can say is my truck has big sack. what a difference takes off like a bullitt now. highway is a little tough 3000 rpms at 55-60 so ill be driving the tj to work alot.
