went to go to work and it wudnt start. so i kept crankin and it wud start when u let off occasionally. but if u move the shifter into any gear it cuts out and if let off the clucth quick it cuts out.... im stumped and have no car so any advice will help
its a 90xj 4.0, stick

is it cranking normally, or sound bogged? do you smell alot of gas? if you crank it for a while, and you smell gas, it could be an ignition problem, bad distributor, plugs, wires. or it just could be lack of power feeding the ignition. if you don't smell gas, a fuel delivery problem. dirty fuel filter, fuel pump is not workin right, etc. *disclaimer* I am just offering suggestions to help brainstorm. It could be low tire pressure for all I know, I am an idiot...

it cranks ok, and i do smell gas but when it does fire it runs fine, it just cuts out. and it will only fire when i let go of ignition, it wont fire when crankin

ok soi got it tostart and revved the engine for a while...it died once did it again and kinda took off with high revs around the block. it ran ok till i wud stop (stop sign) or went up a little hill.it wud buck but wudnt stall if i let off at the right times. it drove rough when it bucked but wudnt die if i kept givin it some gas. im guessin maybe a bad fuel pump or bad fuel pump connection?
im gointo check thosein a bit,,,i hurt my back last night so im takin a break...yeah great day

I am thinking cat. converter is bad/blocked look to see if it is in disrepair.

tried it again this morning and i cant even get it to start... at least before it wud start with some fanagling now nothing i have no clue wtf is wrong with it.

It sounds to me like you may have a bad sensor or wire somewhere. Does your check engine light work? Has it come on recently?
I guess now that it's not running you can start at the beginning. Check to see if the fuel is flowing and if you have spark.

ok i got it started and checked for loose connections, checked fuel pump and everything seamed fine...so i drove around the block and it worked fine, i drove it out to lunch and im headin towrds work and its still fine. im leaning towards a crank shaft censor cuz its kinda what my old jeep wud do... i just wasnt sure if a standard had a cps

Yeah i'm going to go with crank position sensor, swap the one from your old jeep in if th ey are the same partnumber

had to junk that jeep, someone called the health ins[ector on my dad...so all my parts jeeps are gone....sigh prolly shud go get it from the junk yard :/

uggg long day. changed the crank shaft sensor, no dice, so i figured my fuel filter or pump wasn't working (have had a problem in the past), fuel filter didnt do anything and neither did the pump....which now i have to go by new gas tank bolts..... but i think i have finally found my problem! a connection going to the coil is partialy melted/corroded, so the coil and the plug are going to be replaced, if this wasnt the problem i dont know wtf it is, im just gonna cross my fingers and hope this is it lol

that sounds like the problem to me! that means that the connection was intermittent, and was arcing causing enough heat to melt the connector. I did say before that if you smelled gas, and it wasn't firing, it was probably an ignition problem, however I said distributor, not knowing that a 90 XJ had coils. I hope your problem is just that, so you don't waste any more money trying other solutions!
