Well looks like the head gasket needs to be changed, I have an unexplainable overheating issue and lack of power. I'm going to check compression in the cylinders to make sure. If it is the head is there secrets, or other thing I should be aware of to make my life easier? I plan on putting a header on since it will be easy acces. Also I have 161,000 miles on the motor would I be better off buying a newer head if I need to do machine work on this one?

When I did my car's head gasket (inline 4) it was a piece of cake. Never done it before and didnt take me long. Hopefully the head isnt warped.

i wouldnt jump right in there and pull the head off unless your surely getting oil in the coolant. an overheating problem could be a few things air pocket in head, Junk radiator wrong colant mixture, bad T stat.....oh and pushing 35" gums down the highway with 4.88 gearing in 3rd gear at 65...that'll doi it too.. good luck

I'm not saying jump in, but if the signs are correct. In my case my car was "eating" a gallon of coolant per 100 miles. No visable leaks, and I played with it for a few weeks and almost 1000 miles. My mechanic said "dont just assume its the head" but knowing i had 197,000 on an escort. I was pritty sure. Looking back, there is a thing you can put in your coolant that changes color when hydrocarbons from the explosion are preasent in your coolant. It can detect a head leak that is barely leaking and a problem to come in the future. I would try that stuff. Turns the coolant bright red or something if the head is blown.
On the otherhand I am mechanical and like to know how things work so pulling it appart was fun, to find my cyl walls barely even had a scratch in them was awesome, i'm going to push the car to 250k I think.
