had a strange/bad thing happen to my jeep yesterday. i drove on the highway for about 25 mins, with no problems, stopped for gas, went to get going again, and seemed like I had no power (no 4 banger jokes please ;D) Was accelerating on the highway, and got an awful burning clutch/e-brake smell, so i pulled over, my front brakes were smoking. seems like 1, or both of my front brakes were stuck on, and the pads were rubbing constantly, and the pedal felt really stiff. i let it sit, slowed down, got to where i was going and did some mild wheeling a about 2 hours, with no problems. had an hour ride home, no problems. SO, at this point everything seems to be ok, just trying to figure out how/why this happened, and i think i should def. check the pads.

same thing happened to me after the polar plunge. my passenger side locked up and smoked like a mother. i pulled it all apart and used a c-clamp and moved the diaphram around to make sure it would work and it did so i put it all back together and its fine. something probably got jamed in there and then worked itself out.
i would definately check the pads and sand them a little to get rid of the glazing.

Replace the calipers, I believe they are about $30 each. Worth it in the long run I had to replace mine when they foze on. I freed them up with a c clamp but they refroze soon after.

Sounds more like a bad wheel cylinder, but that would require a new caliper

I say that if both front brakes were smoking, it could be the power brake booster. Now, hear me out:
I had a '91 Taurus SHO. One day I hit the brakes, and they never released themselves. There was a little bushing or something inside the booster that was getting hung up on some corrosion. If I pulled the brake pedal up with my foot, the brakes would work fine again.
It's just weird that BOTH calipers would lock up at the same time, IMO. Was it pulling in one direction at all?

the left was def. smoking more than the right one, not sure if it was at all. What would I be able to tell if i removed the wheels and checked out the calipers? If theyre working fine now, could it still be power brake booster?

If theyre working fine now, could it still be power brake booster? Not sure... I only said the booster because when I pulled the pedal up, it released the brakes. Typically, boosters wouldn't affect the brakes like that, but mine did. If it was pulling one way or the other as you were driving, I would say a caliper is done. Sorry I can't help more.

if it's not both sides it is either the caliper or a collapsed brake hose.
