Do you know how hard it is to find an axle assy. for the driverside at 7:30pm? Its kinda tuff, I got Ujoints in hope of locating an axle, but no luck. Then I hadda figure out how to get to work tomorrow with the axle banging around and binding when I turned. hmmmmmmmm Oh just take it out and plug the axle tube, wait, the bolts are smashed and wont be able to get them back in........HMMMMMM....CUT IT....With what? .....Sawzall.....Tuff to cut chromoly with a sawzall.........................................hmmmm.............. TORCH!!!ha 2 cuts and i could slide the whole thing out and plug it up with a BuNg Plug....good deal till I can work on it tomorrow..

Get the 95+ axles with 297 u-joints when you replace them. Unless you plan on getting a reinforced axle. Your best bet is to pop both hubs and take out both axles. Then the diff carrier dosent spin at all, and you can get to work.

Ya, I would have done that but the bolts were mashed and couldnt take out the bolts and put them back it so I torched the side that was junk. ?? I was at autozone...ya i know...getting a axle joint incase I found an axle, and the guy insisted I had IFS.....figures....but anyway it came up with a part number for a cv halfshaft 140.00 for my jeep? whats the deal with that? Not sure, I've had junkyards try to give me that as well. Eventually I find ones with U-joints in it. As I said before get ones from a 95+ they are stronger.

xj axles with the bigger u-joints started in 97
some zj came with cv shafts, i think doug xdgedgex had them and swapped them out

i could be wrong but the frt axles on yj used 297xs' in 95. johnny knows better than me about those new fangled yj jeepy things lol all i know is the 97+ frt axles on xjs' use 297x. and i am unsure about as to wheather or not a yj lp30 is the same axle as a xjhp30 axle?

Rocket, how much did you get your axle for and what did it come with.....Diff-to hub?

yes hp/lp axle shafts are the same, so as long as its a d30 they will work...tj's stat in 98 i believe to use the bigger u-joints to add more options.

I think everyone is pretty much on target, yj's switched in 95, hence why 95 YJ 4 cyl axles are very desirable (4.11:1, 297x u joints, and HP front)
the XJ's best to my knowledge were phased in in 96, but a safe bet would be to look for a 97. also IMHO I would swap out the CV shafts and get U-joints. while CV shafts offer a better turning radius than a open U joint, They historically have less strangth than a Zuzki samari birfield Joint.
also I think the axles from a TJ are up grades for XJ's? I know that are for YJ's cause they are a little thicker near the flange (where they commonly break) but you need to machine the housing. I am going to assume that the XJ is similar... But i am not a xj-xpert
What about simpley swaping the entire fron end from a Junk Yard 97+ xj in there, still retain the HP and get the bigger joints. should bolt right up, swap gears (if needed), weld up the spyder gears, and tool onit

Cote and sons had them for 35 an axle Comes with inner and outer axle and ujoint (used) installed. A direct bolt in for what you broke. I dont believe they have any more. Both times i've gone there they had the wrong part, but found me one at another place, This time i ended up paying $50 only beacuse i wanted to go wheeling the day after and needed it asap. The yard i got it from wanted 75, but the guys at cote called them and had them drop it to 50. Hope this helps, but they wont be much use to you beacuse of distance. You can get a complete frontend for 200 I believe. Or mike had one posted for 125? Might be worth it.

I fixed it tonite, all new joints But mike Ill take that when I have 75 to throw around for spares, prolly next week or so.

i am unsure about as to wheather or not a yj lp30 is the same axle as a xjhp30 axle? The HP and LP axle housings are the same strengh. Its the diff thats the difference. A front diff on most Jeeps TJ, ZJ,WJ (LP) is a rear diff flipped over. All LP diffs drive on the concave side of the teeth. The HP is a reverse cut gear which drives on the convex side of the tooth. Hence why people say its stronger. And it is, at least the R+P part of it is ;D. Bob
