I got the same thing happening on my 92 xj, though it only happens spiradically. No idea what is wrong with the thing. I've checked all my connections and have a new battery.

thanks all for the feedback. went through all the usuals, i.e. ground, alternator, solenoid. turns out, pepboys sold me a brand new junk battery. brought it in 10 days after purchase and it wouldnt even read a charge on the tester. got a brand new one free, hope it works a little better than the first.

I've been having the same thing due to my pos terminal connection, If I vigecrip it onto the battery it works fine. Next time its warm I'm going to replace the connector on the jeep harness.

if your jeep does not crank, dont bother checking your alternator... it does nothing until the car is running. if your lights dim almost all the way out when cranking, then your battery is toast, or frozen. check the water levels.
oh, and DONT GET A BLUE TOP. why would you want a marine battery in your jeep? optima's best starting battery is their [glow=red,10,100]RED[/glow] top, and if you want a deep cycle for winching, insane stereos etc, don't use a blue top (marine), use a [glow=yellow,10,100]YELLOW[/glow] top. it is deep cycle, just like the marine batteries, but designed for automobiles.

That is right steve, and for the ultimate set up, run a dual battery set up with a red top as you primary battery and a yellow top for winching and a back up.
Had my red top now for near 7 years!

I plan on doing a dual setup down the road, probably once my yellow top dies, which will probably be when hell freezes over! You are supposed to use 2 identical batteries of the same age, to prevent parasitic draw from one battery to the other, which would decrease the life of the dual battery setup. At least that is what optima says. have you seen a dual setup with a yellow, and a red? Unless they are isolated, and run seperate circuits, including ground, wont the red top die quicker (lifespan) when used for winching? I am gonna use a dual yellow top, since the yellow top has more than sufficient starting power for me!
I just need to upgrade my alternator wire... it seems I only have about an 8 awg wire from my alt. to my battery... and then 2 awg to my winch! So I saw the 8 awg on the alt, and said... you are the weakest link... GOODBYE!

oh and also some times the stupid starter will stick if you get it wet and it freezes.. I was ready to rip my jeep apart when it came unstuck and was fine.. just a thought.
