I've never had a problem with the 4WD system on my '89, but this morning it started NOT coming out of 4WD when I put it back into 2wd...stayed locked in even though the light on the dash went out. Shifter seems to be moving correctly, light goes out, but 4HI stays in, even if I go in Reverse for 10'-20'. Any ideas? This Jeep is driving me nucking futz lately.

you have the vaccum disco on yout front right? Bob Yeah. It seemed to be working all right yesterday afternoon and this morning, though. I wonder if the vac. disco. system is just getting tired or stuck. Oh well. I don't have the funds to do anything about it right now, anyway.

Yeh but doesnt it mean if that light goes out that vaccum disconnect is working. Seeing the switch for the light come on when that vaccum pushes the fork over which pulls the sleeve over. When that shaft the fork is attatched to moves over if hits the switch and activates the 4x4 light. So if the 4x4 light is on wouldnt it mean the vaccum is working, and if it goes it it would mean the same thing. ?

question, you still can get into 4lo and neutral in the Tcase?? then ya it is the axle, your vacuum disconnect could be working just fine, it is probably a broke shift fork in the axle. fairly simple to replace, any junk yard will have them if that have a jeep with a similar system.
But might want to pull it off to inspect.

Yes, all ranges in the t-case still function normally.
Whatever it was, seems to have worked itself loose. ;D For now, anyway...

I have kinda a weird problem also, I bought my yj with a blown np231. The front and rear bearings blue and mud got into the case and destroyed everything. I had another one, that I swapped the input gear in it from the trashed np231 because the two were from different trannies (ax15 + peaugot). But anyways, I now have a great working t-case but my 4x4 still doesnt engage. I can place it into 4x4 (all ranges) jack up the rear and the front doesnt try to pull, the rear wheels just spin in the air. I have taken off completely the whole set of vaccum lines and blown them all out compltely and there are no blockages. I have taken my vaccum motor off the front axle and can blow the blow gun in either of the two ports and it moved the shift fork back and forth fine and hold it their. The sleeve on the axle slides freely and when in the correct position can slide it over the two axles to lock em together. Not sure what is going on with my system The 4x4 light engages on the dash, like i wrote earlier I would think that would mean the vaccum motor was sliding the fork over and coming to the contact point at the end to turn the 4x4 light on. Any ideas.

When you put it in 4wd, is the tcase engaging the front driveshaft? If it is, a solution might be to go with a manual activator on the front axle. I believe John is doing that upgrade this weekend.

It is engaging the front driveshaft. I have had a posilock before, but I sold it.

Did you try replacing the witch on the tcase? It's under 5 bucks at AutoBone....

It's working fine, and engages and disengages on its own, now. Weird, eh? ;D I'll probably change the switch when I drop the tranny for its replacement.
