after goin out wheelin a few weeks ago i heard a grinding sound, thought it was coming from my front right caliper...well brand new rotors and pads later the noise was still there and it drove me mad. then after taking it on a bit of highway i noticed the noise is worse and found out where it is coming from. its coming from beleow my middle console. now sometimes the noise is bad and the 4x4 lever vibs. it almost sounds like some kind of bearing gone. any ideas what could be wrong? i looked at my drive shafts and u joints but there isnt any play in them...im stumped

Have you checked the fluid levels in the T-case and the transmission?
I'd start there first. Grinding noises aren't good.

check for play in the front hubs just incase. How bad does it shake, is the noise constant, or speed related does it shake more or less with power on or off? Does it do it in neutral?

i had just checked the fluid levels about 2 months ago..prolly ought to change it incase, but the noise is speed related. if i gun it up a hill its bad. but if i put in in nuetral and hit the gas nuttin, its all speed related. the noise is mostly there but occasionally ya cant really hear it. btw play in the hubs? those should be fine, i had to replace front u joints so those were sinched right up...guess ill check again though
oh also i know this is a dumb question but where can i check the t case lvl? is it the same as the trani?

i am a noob too lol it almost looks like part of my driveshaft is out of the t case (about 3 inches of clean metal)....im pretty sure that aint right

I'm pretty sure that is the Slip-yoke on the driveshaft.
That is normal. When you changed your leaf springs, the old ones allowed the slip-yoke to sit further inside the t-case. When you added the newer lifted springs, the slip-yoke slides further out. When people talk about adding a SYE, that is the piece that they replace.
SYE= Slip-yoke Eliminator.
Jay, there are 2 large bolts (30mm) on the back-side of the transfer case. The lower one is to drain the t-case, the one above it is the Filler hole. Remove the upper one, stick a finger in the hole and see if it comes out wet. If not, it's too low and needs more fluid. You had your Jeep submerged in mud/water right? Wouldn't hurt to just drain it and fill it.

oh yeah, 1/2 way up the doors lol. is there a specific transfer case oil? never delt with em b4, just motor oil and trani fluids this is only my 2nd car

I do believe you just use regular ATF in them. P.S. Buy a suction pump or something. It REALLY sucks to fill the t-case. I usually use a turkey baster. It works, and it was cheap!

Screw that, I got a better/cleaner way, not all that new, but works, use a poland spring sport bottle (the one that has the squirt top, empty it out, out the ATF in there, take off the fill, and that little squirt nozzle fits inside the fill hole perfectly. squeeze and refill as needed, a little cheaper, plus you get a refreshing drink of water!

i thought it was from the front but it definately is coming from beleow my middle console (to the right of driver seat)
