My 99 TJ 4 Banger's engine light came on at lunch time today. My first guess is that it's moisture related. I dragged it through a lot of mud yesterday... nej.souther.us/vid/deepjeep.aviThen gave it a good cleaning (including a light spray under the hood). It was also very windy and rainy all morning. The strange thing is though, the light didn't come on until I went to lunch today. All the gauges look normal and it's running fine. The gas cap isn't loose. I'm wondering if I should cancel going to Billy Mountain Sat. I'll see if any of the parts stores near my office have an ODB Code Reader that they can throw on it at lunch time. I gave all the wires a good WD40 spraying just now. Hopefully, it will be out in the morning.

If everything is running fine it will probobly end up being something stupid. I payed a dealership like $100 a while back to read what was wrong and they told me i needed a new gas cap, and filler neck and they probably made that up just to say something was wrong so they could charge me.

I have an OBD II scanner, I can tell you the code for the cost of the gas it takes you to bring your jeep to me! I can erase the code, and if it comes back, you know you really have a problem.

It went out.
I'm fairly certain that it had to do with the wind howling through our parking lot during that downpour yesterday morning.

It could possibly be an o2 sensor starting to flake out.
Next time you get a light, you could try disconnecting the battery for awhile...this will reset the computer. If you have a problem, the light will come right back on.

Thanks, long time no see.
I did that this morning and it did come right back on. After driving for about 20 minutes, however, it went out.
I'm hoping that something was still damp and that the engine warming up together with today's dry air finally cleared it up.
It just rolled over the 60K Mark so it's probably time for a new O2 sensor anyway. I'll probably do that + wires, plugs, cap, and rotor before the start of winter.

Ben, AutoZone should be able to read your codes for FREE. I'm assuming you have a Mass Air Flow sensor on that thing? Or maybe the Throttle body is dirty? I've had luck on other vehicles in the past, by cleaning the MAF with some Electrical Contact Cleaner and a q-tip. Sorry I'm not familiar with the FI set-up on the Jeeps. Good luck.

Yea, pretty much everything was dirty after tueday's run.
I sprayed the wires down with WD40 last night and while I was at it, I did the throttle controles. The light went out halfway to work so either what was wet dried when the engine warmed up or was was dirty and stuck finally worked it's way loose. If it comes one again, I'll find an autozone in the area.

I may not have unplugged it for a long enought time. The clock was unset but the radio presets were still there.
Anyway, it wen out today.
