I havent broke many axles in my time, but mine keep shearing off the axle yokes the U-joint goes into. Is this a common spot to break a D30 fron axle? I've broken both sides in the last 2 months. Maybe its just bad luck. Seems to happen when I'm turning first one I was paralell parking, second time i was making a right turn onto Rt9 on packed ice/snow. Neither time was there a lot of power on. I was wondering if maybe I need to adjust the stop screws on my steering knuckles?
Any ideas would be appreciated, going to pickup a new axle this afternoon.

Ouch!
as for the 260 U joints, check you ball joints, excessive play in them can cause some binding in the joint, again that excessive means real excessive. If you don't know how to test ball joints, it is pretty. look it up hehe
no no jack up the front tire and use a crows bar or something long and hard (wait you can use my....) put it perpendicularly under the tire and pull up, too much play in the tire in two planes of motion (out and up) means time for new ball joints.
It also can be that they are just old and beat.
as for the pinion u-joint, also could just be beat up or... check you trac bar! if your getting some axle wrap, thats the easiest way to break u joints, also consider having the drive shaft balanced, Montrose Machine in wakefield will do it dirt cheap!
The xj is lifted right, if the trac bar is loose, under acceleration, the axle will want to spin up (point the pinion towards the clouds) this will bind up the u-joint and SNAP SOA yj's are prone to this!

Lifted 3" balljoints are good. I'll check my trac bar, I have a new one from rustys but it sadly dents my oilpan and hits my front diff. Thanks for the info.

this is to answer another thread in regards to my xj. yes i have a d30 frt but i have superior axles shafts w/ 297xs'. i used to break a front axle every time i went out wheeling. i think that you a breaking axles due to turning the wheel all the way in one direction and acclerating. when you do this the 260 will explode. the damage you are experiencing is exactly what used to happen to me. i would swap out the axles for 297s' stop screwing around w/ those whimpy 260s' you are just throwing good money after bad. i learned this the hard way. this is what happens w/ a frt locker and crappy u-joints. and by the way another theory as to why you are breaking u-joints maybe they were junk / worn out??

First one I blew was a brand new joint maybe 2000 miles. The second was good last time I checked. I agree with you on the Ujoints, and will be upgrading when I get the parts. Thanks for the info.
