I've heard that this is a problem on a lot of GC's that have full-time 4wd. I feel like mine is beginning to go, although I'm not sure ( not even really clear on what it is or does). I've been told that hopping and weird sounds are normal when turning sharply at low speeds... Anyone know what is normal and what is a serious ($1700) problem??

You don't have a viscous you have progressive coupler. It uses fluid pressure built by the pump in the T-case to lock up clutches like an automatic trans. The pump turns when the front drive shaft turns at a different speed than the rear drive shaft, this causes the clutches to lock up giving you as close to 100% drive to front and rear axles. Check the fluid if it is red or brown in color, then change it with PN:5016796aa 247 t-case fluid. DON'T USE ANYTHING ELSE! The fluid color should be clear older fluid will have a light tan color. Complete a couple figure eight turns, the binding should be gone if it's not drain and refill the T-case again doing the same turns. This should make it all better. If not, then you need a progressive coupling.

I've been hearing that a lot, butthen I lose Quadradrive right?? Yeap. You will lose your full-time 4wd option. You may get slightly better gas mileage with the 231-case, but you will probably have a harder time getting the Jeep moving on wet roads with the V8.

I love the torque of the AWD. I'm not one to go around doin smoke shows, I like pounding the gas and taking off.

Jeep offered a NV242 with the 4.7ltr. and yes the tires spin very easy on wet roads. The input shaft on the T-case has a very long stick out and the planetary gears have a strange cut to them. You would have to swap out the planetary set and the input shaft. The NV247 is a very good T-case as long as it is maintained correctly. Much better than the NP249.

So jeeptech, overland has an NV247 transfer case but it does not have a VC
and I have a NP249 which does have a VC
How did you know the difference if he never said he had one, just quadratrac
