What would cause a drop in RPM's almost to the point of stalling when braking? 4.2 auto Brack

I had a problem similar to this in my car, though its a stick, but my TPS (throttle position sensor) had failed. Not sure if jeeps have that.
If you put it in neutral before brakeing does it still happen? Is it fine in gear with the brakes on when you start it? Does it run rough at idle in neutral?
The more information the merrier.

It does not idle rough and if you put it in neutral prior to braking it does not do it, it idles fine. It runs rich but generally it has been idling fine. It does take two or three cranks to start the engine when the engine is cold but no other problems. Once it is warm the engine starts right up. It is not Fuel Injected and has a Weber carb.

Throttle kick down, Not sure if it is a cable or a electric, but thats my guess, assuming it idles fine.

Just remembered, if it is electric, called a throttle detent switch (at least in chevy's)

Throttle kick down, Not sure if it is a cable or a electric, but thats my guess, assuming it idles fine. The AW4 (which i assume you have) has a cable throttle kickdown from the tranny. Its the one you have to disconnect when you pull the tranny, as i have done much to many times.

I believe you guys may be onto something as I have noticed that the transmission now is not kicking down when the throttle is floored. Cincidence? Thanks, Brack

The auto in a carb'd YJ should be the TF999 tranny, right?
Have you checked all of the vacuum connections too?

i got the same problem just cant find it, my mec told me throttle position sensor but i fell its a vacum leak,rpms go down to 100 and fells like its gonna stall, its only a blue moon thing for me how about you.
also my rpms are jumping well it goes down to 100 from 500-600 and back up, its only done it for 5 min tops and never on the trail,
do you have a auto or a stick i got a 5 speed if you got a stick i find if you wined the gear your in, while the clutch is in, it fixes it somtimes or just pull over till it goes away
any codes [engine light]? and has it stalled on you yet, out of the 100 times mines done that it never stalls just jumps up and down up and down.
hopefully its a jeep desiese doing around and some one will solve it.
where should i start to check the vacum lines? what use a spray bottle while the jeeps running? help

Messton, your problem sounds like it could be the Throttle Position sensor, just like your mechanic told you. Should be a relatively cheap fix.
You could also clean up your MAF sensor. It is probably grimey from off-road use. Take it off and clean it with some Electrical Contact/Motor cleaner.
