do you know if i can remove the steering knuckle on a ~1990 cherokee front end with just hand tools?

Sure ya can Once you have removed the Axle, Hub/wheelbearing assembly and the 2 nuts which hold on the balljoints you will need to "tap" the knuckle down and it comes offf the balljoints. Its a press fit so it may take a little pursuasion. Be ready to have to use 12 point sockets and breaker bars throughout this process.

Ball Joint seperatpr will make the job go a lot easier. They are dirt cheap, crapo zone rents them for free.
One tool you will need that you might not have is a hub socket. I think yours is a 33mm if it is not, it is a 36mm

just give the knuckle a good hit to the side, where the ball joint stud goes into the knuckle, with a 2 plb hammer or so..hit the top and the bottom and the knuckle will fall right off

super, my uncle told me i might need a press to do this.
the reason i need to know is this- my MJs axle is NOT an mj axle...it is from a cherokee. how do i know? because all the brake parts i got for the MJ axle do not fit the axle on there now, but they do fit the axle that i have sitting in the bed of the truck. the axle in the MJ and the axle in the 1990 XJ are the same, and take the same parts.
now back on track. the knuckle on the MJ has slots that have been ground into it by the brake pads, and the knuckle needs to be replaced.

Getting the knuckle off is the easy part, especialy on a 90 that im guessing has never been taken apart its getting the axle nut and unit bearing bolts out that will be a b**** With the axle nut youl need a 36mm socket (you can rent one at auto zone if you dont want to buy) and i recomend spraying PB on it 20min or so prior to removal attempt. Then use an impact gun if you have one (helps alot!) or a breaker bar the unit bearing bolts are 13mm 12 point, they will prob fight you th ewhole way but shouldt be that bad have fun

you dont have to separate the hub from the shaft...just take out the three 12 point hub bolts. and if the hub wont come out as it is. then put the bolts back in 5,6,7 turns it doesnt mater just get them in but now all the way in. then take your socket and put it on the head of the bolt. then smash it with a hammer. hit the bolts out a lil on each bolt and it will walk the hub right out..i have a few sets of the said bolts in my tool box jest for this.have fun

I have a 36mm socket, if you need to borrow, rather than rent. Just remember to return it. Another trick for getting the hub out is to but a short nut and bolt behind the steering stops after loosening the bolts. Then turn the steering wheel slowly and use the PS as extra leverage.

if you knew anything about what your talking about, you would know that the hub assembly and axle will come out together. if he does like i said using the bolts to push the hub out it wont be a problem. then AFTER the hub and axle are out you can loosen the ball joint nuts then hit to the side on the upper and lower and may have you give a Little down words blow. 45 mins tops. anymore and you shouldnt own a tool box

xfactor is right, u can leave the axle shaft connected to the wheel bearring. i pulled em out this way when i junked my old xj to keep the bearrins and shafts
