Iv been having a hard time finding a drivers side drop D44 for my XJ. So i was thinking why cant i flip the axle and install reverse cut gears, making it HP. Then cut and turn the knukles for the corrct caster. Im having a hard time visualising if the gears will drive in the correct direction with the RC gears. Any thoughts?

I thought "waggy" 44's cam in D/S drop durring a few years?? But seems to me that cutting the knuckles off and everything else, and then re-welding it would be an enormous pain in the @ss, and thats if its even possible to do this...my $.02

Yeah some of them were DS drop. Iv looked at about 6 in the area not one was what i wanted. I just did a lil mockup and it wont work by just flipping it. I would need to press out the tubes and swap sides. Cutting the knuckles off is prety simple but pressing tubes out is a PITA.

I would not do that. The HP axle has a drain hole/path for the correct oil flow through the whole diff. You could cause some bad things if you try and flip it. not to say all the work involved.

rubi 44, and waggy 44, or just get a d300 t-case and run passenger side drop.

explain your reasoning on getign a d44 frt? are you breaking the d30 frts? going to run large tires etc?
just curious? cause i run a hp30 w/ detroit and superior axles shafts w/ 35 " boogers and don't have any real issues. and i am not how would you say? "easy on the throttle"

Bluerocket has told me how your "not easy" on your axles. ;D If i ran a Super 30 that would be about the 30s limits right? WIth a 44 i have a larger R&P, bigger brakes and more room for upgrades if i need them. I have broken spiders in a 30 and Bluerocket has broken 2 of the smaller ujoint 30 shafts now. Made me kind of uneasy.

No you can not flip a LO-pinion to be a HP axle.
D44's that will fit your aplication...
66-79 Bronco's IH scouts IH Tavelalls Waggy's older SFA F150 F250 (HD)
or while at it, just get one out of a chevy and put a D300 T case in

"easy on the throttle" Yeah this is what i was telly bobby when he was asking me about it last night. With superior axle shaft upgrades and a full locker that replaces the carrier, HP D30's are VERY similar to a D44 in strength and can easily handle 35's...only seems to make sence since you got so many D30's laying around

I said 35-37 inch tires. I may go bigger. Polishing up a 30 will let me run 35s. Then what. For less i can run a 44 and have room for upgrades. Also D30 brakes are not exactly up to the task of stopping big meats. Anyone know if D30 balljoints are as big as the 44s?
