Stepson and I have been working on my, purchased for cheap, 89 2.5 for a week now. We've accomplished a great deal as there were many issues with this YJ. Here is the list of parts installed to date: Radiator and hoses, battery, ignition coil, distributor, cap, rotor, wires, plugs, starter, oil & air filters, steel brake lines, muffler & tail pipe, oil, antifreeze, throttle cable. She starts up and sounds pretty good, idles well and drove around the neighborhood without sputtering or stalling. Here are the issues; Will not shut off with key/ignition. Something is draining the new battery even with the key removed. Directionals not working but lights work including parking and brake lights. Steering is horrible above 20MPH. I'm guessing tie rods. We lifted the front end and there doesn't seem to be any blown bushings or slop in the wheels, so it's a guessing game. I hate to just replace parts not knowing which ones are defective. So I ask you for your thoughts on these probelms. Your help is greatly appreciated.

Dang..... thats a lot of "working in the garage" Does it have a steering box? you might check to see if there is play in the steering box or even the shaft.

As far as the drainage of the power I would check the reverse switch thats on the top of the tranny(If it's manual). I found that the plastic and rubber on mine gave way with age , then kept shorting out the system. I agree with Chrome on the steering. Most likely it's the steering shaft. Pop the hood and have some fun!

Not much. Let's just say around $1000. Beats paying $3000-$5000 for something and then discovering a bunch of problems. I'm at about $500 in parts at this point and no labor costs. That is sweet. I forgot to mention we replaced valve cover & oil pan gaskets as well as belts. Today I pulled tie rod ends and discovered they were shot and this is the reason for the slop in the steering. I'll end up replacing all four ends for about $70 and she should steer nicely once again. Then it's on to the brakes later this week. Oh, and that odd electrical bug.

Don't know about you but I love when parts go bad, it's the only way I can upgrade with my wifes approval. Bad alt = new H.O. alt, bad radiator = new 3 core radiator so on so forth. The more parts break down the upgrades I get. Good luck with your project hope you have patience cause chances are it will never end.

Electrical problems are always fun. Methinks your ignition might be suspect by the way problems seem to be. Anyways to find the culprit i find easiest way is to remove the positive battery terminal. Then take a 12v bulb < I have 1 i solder'd wires to for this purpose> and attach bulb to positive terminal on battery & other side attatch to positive cable. Notice the bulb glowing? Looks cool but tis really bad. Go to fuse box & start removing fuses til light goes out. Once you find the specific circuit you can start troubleshooting the specific components to that circuit. No labor costs is right, but you have spend a week working on a Jeep. That right there takes $10,000 off the top for the cost. So the way i look at it, is that you are $8,500 up and have really greasy/dirty hands!! You couldn't ask for more!

You're right Tooch. I bought a decent tub on a good frame with a running, though high mileage engine. My stepson and I are having a blast breathing new life into this old buggy. The engine sounds good, the few times we've had her running. Hopefully we will have it road worthy in another week or so. The money I've have saved on labor has to be around 600-700, so far. Tomorrow night tie rod ends go in and possibly new ignition switch. Cost: about $60 in parts.

That is awesome, when I was younger, me and my dad had projects. It wasn't a jeep it was snowmobiles but I wish it was.
