Can someone please help me diagnose this issue? My Jeep Wrangler (1988, straight six, 5 speed) keeps popping out of reverse, I have to "hold" it in reverse when I am backing up, or else it will pop out. I obviously know its something in the tranny, but would like to hear about how each of you fixed it (if you encountered the problem) and how much it cost, or if you did it yourself, how did you do it!? eh this happens at my work to a number of cars, i believe one of the gear syncros is messed up, you could pull the tranny apart and buy a small rebuild kit (i think theyre available) should be the ax-15 tranny for that year) or just find one at a junkyard and make a direct swap, ax-15s you can pick up for very cheap

Do you have any lift at all?
My '89 was doing the same thing after I installed the bodylift and the transfer-case drop brackets (for suspension lift). The shifters were hitting the body tub. Some simple trimming of the metal tub cured the problems.
You should have the Peugot BA-10 5-speed transmission, not the AX-15. The AX was introduced in late '89.

ah thanks mourning woody! i wasnt sure of the cutoff date of the peugot tranny, i didnt even think of the shifter binding on the tub!! take your boot off your shifter and see if the shifter is hitting your body tub, if it is, hack er up get r done

Hmm.....good idea, I will check it out, I actually re-did the whole interior this summer, I noticed a bit of hacking on the tub, but didnt think of why it would be like that or even notice the extent of it, maybe I need to hack at it some more. Yes, it has a 4" lift on it, 31x10.5" tires. I want to say that it has already been hacked out, but not too sure. I called the junkyard to see if they had a tranny, and they asked me if mine was a warner or a asian (spelling is probably incorrect) ? But I dont know, I guess I'll crawl under there tonight to find out! Thanks for all your info!

If it is a syncro, I would suggest looking for a AX15 to swap in place of the Puegpiecepfshit Tranny. It will cost about $300 to have a reverse syncro replaced by a shop, and if your reverse is doing it, only a matter of time for 1st gear goes too (same gear just different direction)
for about $300 or less, you can get a solid AX15 tranny.

Sweet! Any idea where I can find an AX15 tranny? Do I just call a junkyard and ask them for a 5 speed tranny from a 1990 Jeep? Also, is there a conversion kit that needs to be bought, or do I just slap it in place of the Peugot tranny? (I have VERY VERY limited experience with tranny's) Thanks!
