I am going to buy an air intake system soon and dont know which brand to buy. They all seem to offer the same thing.
Any suggestions?
Has anyone had any good or bad experiences with a particular name?

Mine is from Turbo City. I got it a long time ago, now you can buy them from quadratec for a little more money, and they call it the rock-it intake.
I would suggest not getting the open ended filter, just more places to clog mud into, kinda a pain to clean in there.

I bought a K&N filter and cut a bigger hole in the bottom of the stock airbox to let more air in. Im not sure about the open air elements. The mud situation scares me. I get mud all in/on the stock air box. If I did it again I would get a lees expensive filter. Kool Blue or some other brand.

I have had mine submerged in mud, never got any into the intake. Remember in paragoon last october, there was that water/mud hole that Laura got jammed up in, when I went through, water was coming up over the hood, so... it had to be getting wet. never hydro-locked!
K&N repel water very well, has to do with the oiling I think!

Okay! DO NOT BUY A TURBO CITY INTAKE!!!!!!!! the turbo city goes right over the valve cover and obviously the valve cover gets hot so basically you are sucking in hot air which is not good b/c you want cold air to boost performance! so please do yourself a favor and don’t buy one from them! Now the best air filter that you can get in my opinion is a K&N now there are two different systems that work great! you can buy a system from K&N that comes with a tube what the tube does is it vortexes the air into a spiraling motion to help the fuel and air mixture! this is a BAD a** SYSTEM and it can be enhanced with a poweraid throttle body spacer that also helps to vortex the air! this will give you a gain of 25-35 horse power! or the other method which is a lot cheaper is to go to rustysoffroad and buy hi K&N cone filter conversion kit what this does is it takes your existing system and turns it into a air sucking monster!!! all you do is rip out the airbox and stuff a K&N in there hooked out the existing tube! this is the method that I chose because K&N didnt offer the fancy system for my 1990 XJ they only offered it to 91's and up anyway there is nothing like having a 6x9 K&N under the hood!!! I love that whooshing sound and the filter combined with a high flow cat and flowmaster 40 really gives your little 4.0 some more balls!!!! I believe www.rustysoffroad.com has a deal running where you can buy his exhaust system and K&N conefilter conversion for about $200 bucks!! or if you want you can just buy the filter conversion for about $60 anyway that’s my recommendation If you would like to check out pictures of what the rustys conefilter conversion looks like just hit the link to my cardomain web sight

100% true The hotter the air, the less condence it i, less volitile the combustion, the problem that I have found with the other intakes (AEM, K&N etc..) is that it places the intake lower in the engine bay, which will promote water into the intake, not good. Also, I have a Pyrometer gauge and I rigged up a mounting to test the temp of the air coming into the engin with the factory plastic intake, and then with my turbo city when I first got it, cause I always had the same belief. I let the engine idle for ten minutes, the degree difference was only like 3 degrees, if I remember correctly. not really enough to make all that of a difference on a street car. 25-30 hp more from a K&N, especially on a I6, doubt it, more like some where in the area of 3-5 hp at the rear wheel where it counts.
If you want to go the home built route Neal, enlarge the opening to the air box, put in a K&N, and where that ripped black plastic intake tube is, replace it with a smooth peice of PVC schedual 40 the same diameter. cheap and effective, plus if you ever add a snorkle, this will allow for it!

.02 If you go with the open element get a prefilter. Or get 2 filters. The filters may keep mud and water out of your intake but the mud and water will clog your filter. If you want to clean your filter after a day in the mud you will need to plan on having a back up filter. I have only seen realistic gains of about 3-7 horsepower from adding a low restriction filter. Again, I would get a Kool Blue. Less expensive, same results.

I hear that!!
It took 20 minutes to clean my filter after the last Paragon run.
Funny part is, my average speed down was 60 MPH, average speed back was 50mph!!

Well I still Am sticking with what I said!
I'd definitely check out the K&N system
...I forget what its called but you can check out there web sight and read up
then make a decision for your self!
Just so you know the rustys air filter conversion DOES NOT GIVE YOU THE POWER THE K&N SYSTEM DOES!!
yeah the filter gives you a few extra horse not much but the systems like I said b4 makes the air vortex giving you true horse power gains by mixing the air and fuel way better!

Im leaning towards the Rock It air intake system, but I'm still unsure. I like the fact that it isnt open ended or too low and wont get too dirty from driving through mud pits.
I just thought there might be one system that is known to be the best...but I guess thats debatable.

$250 before shipping??? Save your money.... If thats the route you want to go just buy a cone filter(k&n or some other brand) cut off your intake tube and bolt on the filter. Customized and satisfaction from knowing you did it yourself. And a lot, LOT, cheaper. The ad reads 13 horsepower at 4000 rpms. You will never get that horsepower in 4low, rarely in 4hi. i would be thrilled to help you with this project. OR I will sell you my drop in K&N flter and you can help me build a new intake.

That thing is sweet! I like the fact that it has a heat shield!
It is pricy though!
If you dont want to fork out all that cash check out rustys off road system its the samething that everyone is talking about! Its a drop in! but it doesnt have that gheto PVC pipe sh*t that you would have to use to make your own.

Ryan, What is the setup in your ride. I saw your pics on cardomain and that is exactly what I would suggest for Neal. PVC has its place....... and it aint in Jeeps! No fancy heatshields, or tubes, just a filter and a TB spacer. You can also take a dremel with a drum sander and bore out you own throttle body for more airflow. Just like RE charges $250 bucks for.
