I was wondering if anyone knew if an 04 Rubicon uses synthetic diff fluid? I want to change the diff fluid but I am getting conflicting answers.

best to my knowledge, no... but consult your manual. But because the Rubi's lockers, I am not sure if there is a synthetic additive that is required...either way, synthetic would be a good up-grade should you have standard gear oil.

Rubicon Fluid Recommendations and (capacities), from the Factory Service Manual. Updated with info from the '04 FSM.
Front Differential – API GL5, SAE 75W-140 Synthetic Gear Lubricant (4.0 pints) Rear Differential – API GL5, SAE 75W-140 Synthetic Gear Lubricant (4.0 pints)
*** The Rubicon TRU-LOK LSD does not require the use of a Friction Modifier, but it is included in most Synthetic Gear Lubricants, but not all***
Automatic Transmission – ATF+4® (service fill, 8 pints) Right now ATF+4® , a synthetic-based ATF is only available through DaimlerChrysler. See notes below
Manual Transmission – Mopar Manual Transmission Lubricant (4.2 pints) **Indications are that 5W-30 Motor Oil can be used, until this is clarified I recommend that you spend the bucks and buy from Diamler/Chrysler.
Transfer Case (NV241) – ATF+4® (4.2 pints)
Engine – Outside Air Temperature above 0° F = SAE 10W-30 (Preferred) Outside Air Temperature below 32° F = SAE 5W-30 GF-3 API Certified For Gasoline Engines (6 quarts with new filter)
Cooling System – Mopar Antifreeze/Coolant HOAT {Hybrid Organic Additive Technology} Zerex G 05 (14.5 quarts) See notes below
