Hi all,
I just installed the Monroe steering stabilizer on my 2003 Rubicon and thought I would share it with you. Yeah, there are better write-ups on this and my pix leave a lot to be desired. Anyway, I picked up part number SC 2928 from Lappen's. It cost 29.24 with tax. I have heard that you can get it from AutoZone for 24 and change but not around here. They would have to order it and I didn't want to wait. Here is a pic of the stock and the Monroe together with the Monroe on the bottom.
Here is the stock on the Jeep.
The steps that I took.
1. I removed the cotter pin.
2. Then removed the nut that held the Stabilizer to the Drag Link.
3. Now removing the bolt from the Tie Rod can be an issue for some but I was lucky. A couple of moderate strikes from a small hammer and it popped out. I have heard of others using wheel pullers or Pickle forks to get them out. Although the pic is less than great, you can see the part I'm referring to. In the pic, the nut and pin are still on the bolt.
4. Removed the bolt and nut attaching the other side of the stabilizer to the Axle bracket.
5. Now its time to install the new one. It is just a matter of first, using the new hardware for the Drag Link side and attaching it to the stabilizer. That includes: The main bolt, two washers one with a larger hole in it, two nuts, and a new cotter pin.
6. Insert the bolt through the washer with the lager hole, then through the Stab, then the remaining washer and nut.
7. Torque this bolt to between 46 and 48 Ft pounds. I went with 48.
8. Insert the axle side of the Stab into its bracket and torque to 55 Ft pounds.
8. Insert the remaining part of the Drag Link side bolt into the Drag Link and hand tighten the castellated nut.
10. Torque this to 55 Ft pounds. I did this and the nut aligned itself perfectly for the pin to be inserted. Got lucky I guess.
Here is a pic of the new Stab installed.
My Impressions:
On my test drive, I found the steering to be much better than it was. I was surprised how much of a difference this 28-dollar upgrade made to my Jeep. It was firmer with less wobble when hitting a bump and I went out of my way to hit them all. For bang for the buck value, I give it an A+.
