What size welder should I get?

I am thinking on getting a Arc welder. Now I am going with a Arc because they seem to be in my price range. But for frame welding what size should I get?

If this is your first welder, I would suggest a 110 Mig, I am not a fan of flux core wire, so I would suggest a 75% CO2 25% argon mix gas

arc welding is not going to be real useful to you, honest.

i would think you woiuld be better off spending the money on a mig welder, like johnny said.

mig welders are more expensive to buy but much more useful. i own a arc and mig welder and i only keep the arc around for fixing plow frames, heavy equipment buckets, etc. basically they are really only good for heavy dirty welding (well, you can do more with them but it is not worth the effort)

go with a mig 220 volt. 220 is good for 3/8" plate give or take. if your going to buy a welder buy it once. arc welders are 220 anyway. miller 210 is something that you would probably never grow out of. my 2 cents

id get 220 also if you can save the money and have the wiring where your gonna put the welder, the 110v gets real old when you cant lay nice beads on anything thicker than 3/16

Go big or go home. If you get a 110 you will out grow it very fast and be kicking yourself later. Spend the money once like adam and rich are saying, you will be much happier.

i got a lincoln ac arc thats from like 1950 and ther think works the balls, stick welding is def not the cleanest easiest and most useful type of welder, and if you've never welded or taken a welding course stick with mig because you could prolly teach a chimp to use it not knowing anything about it yourself, i did my entire roll cage and everything else on my jeep with stick, but would have liked to used a mig or tig

That being said I think I might hold off on getting one. John when I get everything fitted and ready to weld. How about I get a case of beer for some welding?

Stick welding isnt the devil. I dont mind doing it. With alittle practice it can look good and its cheap.

anyone have an old 220 they want to sell for cheap??

I hear that a stick welder is good even through some rust? It is mainly going to be under the Jeep so it does not need to look pretty. I still may hold off and maybe get an on board welder. It might come in handy if your running a 13 year old Jeep on the trails.

yeah, you can weld rust with an arc welder. but you have to clean the weld after. my neighbor has a arc. if i get a welder, it will be a mig.
