Both are very good and reliable rear ends. your driving habbits and off road skills will be a big part in determining the life span of any axle you put in.
The 8.8 is marginally stronger than the 44. the spline count in higher (31spline the D44 is 30) and the ring is also larger (8.8 inches the D44 is 8.7 I think) You get the rear discs and the swap can be done for short money depending on your skills and ability (grinder welder etc..) There is one huhe down fall to the explorer 8.8 which rarly if ever gets mentioned... the axles tubes have lots of flex in them were they meet the differential housing. there are I believe 6 spot welds that hold the tube to the axle and when off road they have a little give in them hence bending the axle. easy fix is to stitch weld the tube to the housing.

the toyo is still light compared to super swampers or another bias ply. i ran a stock d44 for a long time and never had a problem with it. on 35s and i beat the tar out of it. jeepgod also has a 44 with boggers and a detroit. his is fine as well, and our driving is somewhat similar. i guess its all in your driving. i had a d35 with 33 mts and it worked fine for 3 years. then i replaced with 44.

if you want discs on your D44 I saw a write up somewhere. you can get the backing plate for a rubicon, disc, calipers and mounting bracket. you can do it for little cake, compared to the $600 kits in Quadratec.

remeber where you saw that write up? i think it was on jeepforum.com. And all the parts for it were sourced new through aftermarket and the dealers parts dept. I'll see if i can find it.

well summer is coming quick if anybody knows where I can get one with 4.10 gears cheap let me know. Check with Linder's in Worcester they have 8.8's with 4.10's for less than $500 bucks. They also have a website.

i beg to differ....first trip on my 35's my 44 blew up. 2g's later i was back on the trail and still wanting to upgrade it more with alloy shafts or going to a prorock 60. A pro rock 60 for 35's....

if your looking for a cheap 8.8 , look at Universal auto in uxbridge i think. for $200 with all brake parts, and some even have limited slips, thats where i got mine.

I got my dana 44 for $50. The bone yard had one of those all you can carry out for $50 deals. Just watch the yolk when ya put it down, I almost lost the youch pouch!
