i am noticing my tj is running a little rough but i don't know much about engines. if i am at idle just sitting there you can feel the jeep almost shake a little while it idles. it does it sparadically (spelled wrong) and you can see the needle on the tach bounce a little bit. any ideas or if you need more details to help let me know, thanks...vince

Is that one of those old 2 cyl Iron Dukes hehehe Couple things can effect idle, I would start with the les expensive 1. Clean you throttle Body out, makes a world of a difference 2. check/change spark plugs, a fouled plug can cause a rough idle and a little rough at low rpms 3. cap and rotor, cheap anough... if there is any h2o in there is will run like poopy! 4. Jeeps are notorious for idleing rough cause the Coils are not up to the duty and riggors we demand. 5. see if the air cleaner is good. Now they get expensive 6. catalytic converter, if there is a small blockage, gonna bog the motor 7. throttle position sensor 8. o2 sensor 9. intake vavlve not fully opening 10. pcm, ecm, bcm, what ever you want to call it issues if it idleing real high, IAC motor.

it is a 2000 6 cyl and has 50,000 miles on it. i will try replacing the cap rotor and plugs but now the question is...are these parts i would want to go with oem stuff or aftermarket? if aftermarket...then does anyone have any suggestions. thanks...vince

JEEP still had caps and wires in 2000? i thought they switched to the coil rail that year, i have an 01 and theres no plug wires or dist. cap. maybe they switched in 01. Seemed like it was earlier tho.

Vince, your jeep is distributorless, they changed this in 2000 from the 99 year...If there are no check engine lights on its probably something small, try cleaning your throttle body and checking your air filter, you could even throw some new plugs in...you do have 50k! I was reading in the JP mag I got yesturday and it lists a bunch of things that go wrong on TJ's and one was a rough Idle at about the milage you have, but I don't recall the exact problem. I think they mentioned the crank positioning sensor Idle positioning sensor, and some other garbage sensor.

I think they mentioned the crank positioning sensor Idle positioning sensor, and some other garbage sensor. garbage sensor is correct!! mine actually does this as well...just about 80k on it, 99 4.0, but it never dies out....actually wait, once in 4LO, pissed me off, now that you mentioned it John, I think it is the crank position sensor thing, I think q-tech sells upgraded ones to fix this problem if I am correct....but it's summer....I won't be looking at the tach, rather the boatload of bizzles in the cars next to me...

As i said before i know very little about engines so will what xdgedgex suggested work for me or not? no...you have no distributor, so no cap to replace..since you have a 2000 model year...you can try pulling the plugs and seeing if theyre okay...if you're around this weekend I can swing off campus and help out, I'm sure I'll see you later this week anyways, did you like how I swerved at you yesterday? haha
