is f**** leaking bad enough that oil is leaking onto my down pipe and burnning and comming up through the tranny/tc holes and making me choke to death. i feel dizzy...seriously how hard is this to change, never done this before

Its not too bad, I have done a few of them. You have to drop the oil pan to get to it.

its easily doable especially in a lifted vehicle because you dont have to move other stuff to get the pan off. the hardest part is getting the pan off and on with gasket staying lined up.
***Also on that note alot of newer 4.0L owners may want to adress this problem before they have to do they're seals as dan is. i think its only on standard shift trannys but there is a hole above the bellhousing in the adapter plate that likes to hold mud sand dirt and anything else right up against the rear seal causing it to wear extremely prematurely. PLUG THE HOLE! before its too late! you can find it under the hood right in the top of the bellhousing/adapter plate filler up with some rtv and be done.***

good advice, thanks patriot yeah im not going to be around as of 5pm tonight, so have fun in the driveway , ill be gone until monday! haha so thats what that smell was!!

Yeah so i did end up doing this on my own in about 3-4 hours of actual work time. I started saturday late afternoon, gave up around 7:30 and started again sunday afternoon. Its a messy job, and i deff gota say prob 10x more of a PITS if your jeep isnt lifted alot. Even still, getting the oil pan off sucked, its about 25 bolts that are all hard to get to and covered in about 150 thousand miles of dirt oil and other crap, Then you remover the starter and drop it down. The main bearing nuts came off iwth out a problem. Theres two parts to rear main seal, one part that sits in the main bearing cap that you remove and another part that is actualy in the block, its this part that can be a PITA to remove. I ended up using a punch. from there on out it was pretty strait forward. put new seals in, apply RTV were neccesary, clean everything, put new oil pan gasket in and bolt everything back up.
Its a messy job that kinda frustrating at times, but really not difficult at all.
