Okay, I have come to the conclusion that the AOD is a bad idea. And as much as i wanted to go with the auto 4 speed looks like i'm going with the c6 trans. which i think should bolt to the 5.0? (calling out jps4jeeps...lol). Now what should I do about the t-case?......I'm pretty sure theres no way in hell I would want to keep either the stock t-case or the rear end. The thing is I'm trying not to butcher the driveline angles to much due to the SOA conversion the driveline angle is already pretty extreme. I spent last summer on pavement trying to figure out what i wanted to do for a motor before i bought a sye kit. and at this point i'm glad i waited....Someone told me i should shoot for a dana 20? for a t-case? then what to do about the rear end? maybe matching dana 44's for a yj? I'm realy interested to hear some sort of ideas........keep in mind that i am , like many of us , on a fixed budget. And more of a do it yourselfer then send it to a custom truck shop and signing away my first born. My thanx in advance, Bob

the AOD is not the best "out of the box"trans but it can be built to be very strong. i know many people who run them and have had no issues w/them. but hey the c6 is very strong. although i don't think it will bolt up. what about the c4 a 3 spd auto that came behind 302 in the 80s'? the d20 tc is and can be used very economically and is very strong. plus it can be bolted up easy. just my .02

Not for nothing... but when It comes to fords, I am not the expert. chevys yes! ford no...
No matter what tranny you put in there you will probably need to use an adapter or change the input shaft.. the most inexpensive way to make this happen is to swap everything over from the ranger and put it into the jeep (assuming it is a 4wd ranger) if not I would look for a late 80's 4wd ford with a 302 in it. use your motor, and swap the tranny and tcase over, then sell/part out the rest of the two trucks, hopefully you will make some of you money back.
Now comes the question about SOA, so I will answer the question with a question... Why a V8?
A very economical and effective way to cure driveline vibes and get the fuel injection and the power curve you desire (notice it says curve) I would swap in a Vortec 4.3! Same torque as the I6 4.0, and maybe 3 more HP but.... the motor is like 1/2 foot shorter than a I6 and is a couple inches longer than the 4cyl. so If you put this motor in with the auto tranny from the same truck, the NP 231 with a SYE will almost bolt up (need a clocking ring I believe) Put a elecric fan on there as a puller fan, you can probable move your entire drive train foward about 8 inches... with a SOA, you will have very good drive line anlges, no need for a T-case drop. Plus you get those S10/S15 trucks cheap.
Example.. I am in the process of buying a 94 S10...120K miles. body is OK interior is a little beat from the owner having two dogs, and the front differential plunger that accuates 4wd is not working... price to me...$300 for a very good motor and tranny!
Ponder that!

Thats a pretty cool set up.......I just wanted to do something different.........but trying to do something not alot of people have done takes alot of fabrication , time and money..........starting to think the whole idea isn't worth the frustration.

I was contemplating finding a old frito-lays delivery van and pulling the 4 cy diesel out and dropping that in a jeep. Now thats different! (but the trucks are hard to find, cause they are aluminum construction, they usually just put a new motor in them.

I always wondered about that. Why don't people ever do diesle conversions in jeeps? and if you ever do you better do a write up on it! the write ups i found on 5.0's were not all that worthwhile.

Cause it is not the easiest of swaps to make, but it is done, I have seen it, also diesels just don't make a whole lot of horse power, and it seams everyone wants horse power, when torque is what gets you up the trail

This much is true......Thats why I guess I'm gonna put the whole 5.0 thing on the back burner....I wanted more overall power and tourqe. it just seems the i6 4.0 is the way to go with a few add ons it's more than capable on the trail and at a fraction of the aggrivation/money!
