Hey, I just test drove a 97 grand cherokee. I loved the the entire thing, and it was a great rid and clean. When I drove it it had great power and ran like a charm. The only thng I didnt like was that when the tranny downshifted, from 2nd to 1st is kind of downshifted firmly so that you could feel it and was quite notacable. I owner has paperwork that the tranny has been rebuilt and is 15k miles old but no warrenty with it. I was told however by one of my friends that there is an adjuster on the side of the tranny to control downshifts. I just wanted to see if anyone agrees with this. I have tried looking online but found nothing, I am also going to check it out tomorrow when I get to work. Thanks, Mike

i have never heard anything like that about an adjuster on the side of the tranny, but i may be wrong, i have read alot about zj's on different boards and websites. if there is no warrenty might want to keep looking. there are alot of cheap zj's out there.

There are bands to control the shifts on the cherokee (regular) but I think you shoudl say screw it, and find a new one. a rebuilt transmission screams NO to me. If its rebuilt and shifts funny. Walk away, and take your money elsewhere. I agree with jeepgod he's never steered me wrong before.

or use the crappy shifting tranny as a point to get the price down!
Drive it till the tranny dies, put a new one in, they are everywhere in Junk yards!

I agree on the fact of the rebuilt tranny NOT shifting properly.
If it's really nice, try to use that as a bargaining tool. if the guy won't drop the price much, I'd probably pass. I'll show you a reason why:
My wife is a nanny for 2 children. The parents gave her a '95 Grand Cherokee Limited with the 5.2 V8 to use as transportation. Around the 120k mile mark, the original tranny was really starting to act up...downshifting at weird times, skipping gears, slipping, the whole nine yards. Anyway...they brought it into a tranny shop and has it rebuilt ($1800 or so). Within the next 12 months, it had gone back to the shop for various tranny problems (still not shifting right, skipping gears on take-off; try taking off and the thing is stuck in 3rd). The shop tried fixing it several times, but they couldn't find the problem. Then, one day the thing just stopped working all together. Oh well....end of the Jeep. They donated it for a tax write-off (man, was I pissed!)
