hi guys, im back. its been about a year maybe since i was on here last.
ok so i was putting on my winch to my bumper today and when i was screwing in the 4 bolts to mount it to the plate, i snapped the last one off inside the winch. its the forward bolt on the left side. so if there is nothing in there, when i line in, the pressure will be holding that front part of the winch down to the plate anyways. anyone see this as a major problem? i will eventually fix it right (drill,tap) but for now, think it will hold up ok for my tj?

It seems with the force involved in winching that I would not want any bolts snapped off. I would play it safe and drill/tap it now.

I will probly take your advice. why are these 4 bolts so cheesy? i mean, it broke without even using a breaker bar. just a ratchet and some elbow grease. all 4 seem so weak to hold such a great force.

The bolts on my winch were supprisingly small when I installed it, however you have to remember the bolts are used as a clamp to create friction between the winch and the winchmount. This friction combined with the shear strength of the bolt (differant than rotational) is what keeps the thing on.
9000lbs is relatively small compared to other forces which act on the jeep, and the pull is always steady without shock load caused by things like "bumping it over" obsticles.

when I snap a bolt in a new application I use a dremel tool to cut a slot large enough for a large standard screw driver and then just un screw it. This method works great aslong as the bolt is not corroded in there. drilling and tapping it out is a real pain in the as.

what kind of winch is it. i snapped a bolt on my warn xd9000 and when i took it off the nut inside was only a square nut. the nut slides in from the spool side of the footing. there were no threads actually in the winch footing. i just drilled it out not worrying about threads and popped it off and out with a screwdriver and a hammer.

home depot has the exact square nuts and all the grade 8 you need.

The best way to do it would be to either
A. Bolt the winch plate down and weld it in also.
B. Or just straight up weld it in.
Mine winch plate is welded in. My jeep frame would straighten itself before the winch plate comes off. I have pulled big loads with it.
