My transmission (aw-4) started acting up a coupple of days ago. When you start out it shifts from 1st to 2nd and when it goes to 3rd it free wheels and if you down shift is free wheels. I changed the fluid checked the throtle linkage and it still does this I'm guessing it is screwed. I located a 98 aw-4 for $300 with 33k on it just wanted to get some opinions. thanks Brendan Oh and I also have a sye to put in

sye goes into the transfer case, second, ya sounds like you need a tranny, you changed the fluid, did you change the filter?

You need to scan the trans controller for trouble codes. It could have a bad shift solenoid, That's easy to change or a wiring problem. What did the fluid look like when you drained it? Was it black and burned? How long has it been shifting erratically? You shouldn't pay more than $200 for an AW4.

the fluid looked fine and smelt fine not burned I changed the fluid and filter and there was no change, I then Had a mechanic friend take it for a test drive and look at it and He said that it was new trany time.
I went on line and located a transmission with 34k on it and I picked it up yesterday it was $300 and came with a 100 day warenty.
And John thank you for clarifying that a sye goes in to the tranfer case that should help sort things out when I go to install it. ;D
The junk yard I went to was called Henry's it is located at 676 Rathbun St. Blackstone, MA 01504. They had 3 97+ xj's another 12 or so pre 97's at least 7 grand cherokees a CJ a Yj all in all a really big junk yard. There was some tow hooks and skid plates, the realy nice cars were in a full service yard public not allowed in. The 3 cherokees looked pretty good, all involved in an accident.

We threw a new transmission in it yesterday, still the same problems. Checked the engine and tranny codes with a obd2 reader and the jeep comes up with nothing. I'm wondering if it could be the tranny control module or something stupid?

Did you check the TCM fuse? If you need a TCM I have one. Check your powers and grounds FIRST.

Now he has an extra aw-4. Did you scan the PCM or the TCM for codes?

They scanned for codes after we did the swap, no codes on either after the new tranny. There were tranny error codes on the old one though but I do not know what they were.

why would you check the jeep for codes or a good ground? it's way easier to swap an entire tranny and kill a day!!

when i first started driving i killed 2 batteries by leaving the key in the run position so im very anal about leaving the key in the off position. i didn't leave the key in the run position the person who helped me might have left it in the run position. good come back thou
