found an ad for this....
Dana 30 out of 88 wrangler. 4:11 gear ratio. great condition.
I have a 99 XJ that has 3.55 gears in it now and I need to upgrade to a 4.10 front and rear. Question is, would a 4.11 and a 4.10 rear mate up together to allow the 4x4 to work. And, will it even fit?
It's a 100 bucks and if it will fit I'd like to grab it for when i do the swap out... only if it will fit and will mate up with an XJ 4.10 rear.
thanks

a 4.10 and 4.11 will work fine together, however a 88 wrangler is a leaf spring front end I believe, so you would need a weld on bracket kit to make it bolt up(read as $350 plus welding)

look for a MJ front axle out of a vehicle with the factory tow package, exactly the same as you XJ axle, bolts right in, but has 4:11 gears.
To tell if it has a factory tow package it will have a D44 rear (oh ya, grab that too, not a direct bolt in, but it will fit!)

Ok... in my searching i'm getting pretty confused here... maybe someone can help me out
D44 or D35 in the rear vacuum disconnect or not (i'm told by my buddy that it's the weakest point on the D30) do they make D30's without them, shoudl i be looking for that ABS or no ABS ?
what do i really need to look for with a 99 XJ?
my buddy's no use cause he just keeps telling me that my truck is inferior to his cause i'm stuck at 3.55 gearing and he's upgraded his to 4.10/4.11. he's a pain in my a**

very loaded question.. What is your fabrication skills?
Yes they are vacuum disconnect, the best thing to do Is to swap out the axles for TJ shafts, that will eliminate the CAD (central axle disconnect) and will also give you the larger 297x U-joints (stock MJ are 260) the 260 joints are the weakest link, if the vacuum system goes on the trail, it is accually a easy fix, but a PITA.
Here is what I would sugest, look for a 87-89 XJ with a factory tow package, you will want the D44 and D30 front axle, they are a direct bolt in, you won't have the 4.10 gears (correct me if wrong) but you did not mention what tire you run, or the tranny, cause that matters in the equation. then I would swap out the stock shafts for TJ shafts.

dude i wouldnt really consider a an xj with 3.55 inferior to a truck with 4.10 based soley on the gearing.....a lot of it would have to do with driver skill and other factors
there are a number of guys in this club that run xj's with bigger tires and 3.55, while it isnt ideal, you can still wheel the piss out of the rig
i would worry about all the skids and everything before i worried about swapping axles to get 4.10, and why go through swapping two axles to only get 4.10 gearing...your gonna want way stronger than stock axles in the future to handle bigger tires anyways, and 4.10 gearing is good for 31" tires....if your gonna run bigger tires you are gonna want lower gears anyways so i wouldnt waste my money on swapping two axles to get 4.10, but thats just me

i'm running 32" BFG AT right now..
ayoung, you make a lot of sense about the skids and such.. i really dont have any skids underneith just yet and need to get some. That's one of the things my truck is missing.
I was kinda posting this post to get an idea for the future, doesn't mean i'll be doign this tomorrow, but just trying to learn as much as i can, so over time, i can be knowledgable enough to grab a rear or front end that will bolt in quick if i see one.

get a D-44 rear from an XJ, not all were 4.10, MJ's have different spring perch position but it's still a D44 w/ the correct WMS to WMS and get a D-30 HP from a 96-98 XJ w/4cyl most will have 4.10's and 297 joints. The earlyer 4cyl XJ's had 260 joints but were HP and 4.10. Any thing else will require a lot of fabrication. One other option is a TJ Rubicon front end, direct bolt in but it will cost you.
