anyone know what applications i need to look for to get the non disco front axle shafts to put in my yj?can i use the 2000ish tj shafts with no tone rings so that i get the 297 joint?thanks.

Yes you can. All TJ's have 297 shafts.

just slide em in and make a block off plate for the vaccuum disconnect?

710068 from advance auto parts. You need to make a blockoff plate too, or remove the innards from the vacuum shift motor and use the motor's housing. The seal goes on the outer side of where the vacuum motor is now.

so i install the seal on the side of the disconnect closest to the knuckle correct?it doesn't look like theres a machined surface for the seal to ride on the shaft....

You are correct. Machined surfaces of seals are metal, those sit in your housing. the rubber of the seal sits on the shaft. just make sure you clean everything in there out the best you can. The seal has to be driven in from the driver side out. Good luck. Mine wasn't fun.

i obviously want the lip facing in correct?did you get it in thru the disco opening or did you have to pull the carrier?thanks.jeremy

you want the seal situated in a way that the shaft's entrance is un-obstructed; meaning, if you're a little off center, the rubber will re-center the shaft. make sense???
I did put mine in thru the disco opening. I also already had my carrier out due to a shaft breaking. I placed the seal in its new home thru the disco opening, then installed it via a long object and a hammer from the driver's side. You might have to remove the carrier to make sure you get it seated straight.

Are you sure the seal dosent go right at the Diff like a non vac disco 30? I've never had a vac disco appart but it seems a seal in the middle of the shaft on a non machined surface wouldent work well?

The seal from the factory goes on the outboard side of the disco housing. I am sure because I've done this. For some ridiculously strange reason, the diameter of the housing is not equal on both sides. One side is the right size for the seal the other side is not even close to the same size.
