I bought my 88 MJ from a member on this board (BirchBomber). I read all of his old posts hoping to shed light on this issue. The issue is that R, 1-2, 3 work (i know that R and 1-2 do) but D wont. He said that it needed a new shift computer. I researched, and found that it was located under the passanger dash, and i looked and i found it. I pulled it out of my 1990XJ and went up to the MJ. to my relief this was missing from the MJ. I just wanted to be sure that this was infact the computer, so here are the pics. Then i moved my XJ, and D worked....but there was a ton of slippage somwhere. so i dont know if this is the right part. i didnt know where to put this in..so ill put it here. in a box of parts that he gave me there are about 5 of these boxes...some with red stickers and some with orange stickers. kinda peculiar i think. thanks.

Yes, that is your TCM. The other thing to look for is a fuse in the harness to the TCM. Under the knee panel on the passenger side. The fuse is mounted in a fuse holder, if that is blown you will have shift issues. The TCM's are not all the same, so you will want to get the correct PN: if you need to replace it. Allthough this is not a common failure, usually a fuse or a wiring/ connector issue.

ok, that helps. ill look around for the fuse and see if anything else is wrong. i hope its not a wiring issue, that will be a problem.

the reason i knew it was a TCM is because there was none, and 1-2, 3, R work fine. i tried to plug in the TCM tonight to see if it worked, and to my observations it didnt. the wheels spun just as fast in D w/ the TCM ans they did in D w/o the TCM. What do you mean by the corect PN...is that part number? the replacement came out of a renix 4.0 w/ AW4 and went into a renix 4.0 w/ AW4.

Does your power/comfort switch work? It must operate properly. It has a fuse, this fuse also powers the shift selector, it's 7.5 amps. You will need to check the TCM connector for proper input to the TCM. It has a 32 pin connector, The connector is labeled with C1-C16 on the the clip side and D1-D16 on the other. D7 is a ground pin, D14 is a 12V pin, D16 is an ignition sw. 12V pin, These are the necessary pins you must have input at. The following are outputs, C15 S2 solenoid, C16 S1 solenoid. C8 and C9 are 12V inputs from the gear selector C8 is 1-2, C9 is D you should have power at the connector when the shifter is selected to D or 1-2. This is a good start. You should have PN: 53005305 TCM.
