i have narrowed down my transmission problems on the MJ to the solenoids (pretty sure all 3 are ca-put). i need to drop the pan to get at them, and have a few questions. 1 is what should i do about the line coming through the pan? can i just remove it when i take off the pan, does it come with the pan? and when i am done, can i use RTV to seal up the tranny, or do i need to get an actual gasket?

i have always used an actual gasket, they are not that expensive and a lot less messy when trying to line up the million bolts that hold it on
the line is for the dip stick, it can be a real pain to get off, you need to disconnect it from the tube going up into the engine bay, there will be like 6 inches of metal tube left on the pan itself
like i said it can be a decent pita, or maybe it will go smooth
while you have the pan off, clean it out, clean the magnates and make sure you put the magnates back in the pan before you put the pan back on....it is very annoying to have to take it off again

What tranny is it? Maybe you can find a cheap working tranny to swap in there? I know I gave away a 21 spline aw4 last summer that I didnt need.

I would go with the gasket vs the rtv because it is a larger unit and something that just wouldnt make sence to use rtv for. My dad and I usually use both of them together which works great.

What tranny is it? Maybe you can find a cheap working tranny to swap in there? I know I gave away a 21 spline aw4 last summer that I didnt need. its an AW4. I have another one that works fine. The tranny in the MJ is mechanically solid, its just the electrical issues that need to be dealt with.

Dealer should have the pan gasket, and usually they are a nice reusable on that they sell you for under $20

napa would have it but advanced auto would be cheaper. and go with the gasket. one thing i would def do too, is get some "right stuff" black rtv and rub a VERY thin layer into both sides of the gasket.

Ok, I'll put a call into some parts stores, and the dealer tomorrow. Is "Right Stuff" the name of the RTV? Because I have some of the blue stuff that I used on my axle.

yes right stuff is just more expensive rtv basically. do not get it at the dealer, even autozone carries the tranny gasket, dealer is gonna screw you over on it

I went to pepboys today, and got a new filter, and a gasket. Im going to borrow some torque wrenches from my uncle, then im going to tear into the tranny tomorrow...wheather i will emerge victorious is unknown.

right stuff is the name of the rtv and its a black rtv its made by permatex. anything made by them is pretty good but i wouldnt use anything other than rightstuff between the gasket suface. either use that or just go in dry. because the "wrong stuff" will just make it leak. dont use ANYTHING silicone on gaskets. or between two metal surfaces.

i always clean the pan with a gasket cleaner or something, and then glue the gasket on. i dont usually use rtv. its too much of a mess. with waterpumps however, i use the gasket and rtv. dont ask me why, i dont care if its not as good. it works. and ive never had a problem!
