My aw4 is leaking, has anyone taken one appart before? It seems that its leaking out the front as its dripping down the bellhousing. Here's a little more info.
On sat on they way to the trails, I lost about 3-4 quarts of fluid, On the trail It didnt leak and I wasnt bieng gentle. On the highway on the way home it leaked out another few quarts.
Does anyone know if there is a seal on the front of the tranny that can simply be replaced? I'm having a hard time picturing the way it works.

There should be a seal, Auto trannys need to hold pressure, I bet that when on the high way, the pressure of the fluid to keep the tranny in gear at hi rpm's is more than when crawling.. hence why your seeping fluid.
Now I am trying to picture your tranny and the leak, is it leaking from the connection between the tranny and bell housing, or from a seam where the bottom of the tranny bolts up? There is a fluid transfer from teh tranny to the torque converter, could be something in there.

It looked like it was leaking from between the motor and the tranny, John. It was dripping right onto the exhaust pipe. Oh, and it was more than a little seeping Glad to see it made it all the way home, Bobby.

yeah, we left warren at about 11pm and i was home by 12:30. (we ran a bunch more trails then went out for pizza and brews.)
I made it about 65 miles before it started blowing tranny fluid out, and then once i stopped and filled it up made it the rest of the way without leaking, seems it may be temperature related, I'm at a loss as to whats up with it. I was babying it though, kept it at 2000rpm in the slowlane.

Because people dont answers your posts cause your stuff breaks in ways we cant explain I will say this, Lets pull it back to my house and get the tranny out of it this weekend and put that thing on the rag so it stops leaking for good.

Front pump seal. Check the lip of the torque converter when you have it out for wear or it will not seal.

Pulled the tranny out of my 87 XJ yesterday in NY and brought it back here this morning. So now I have a known working one if it comes to that. Since its high mileage (250k on the 87 cherokee) I'm going to try keeping the 92 tranny and swapping in the torque converter, and check the input shaft seal. I'll post up once I pull my tranny this weekend. Thanks for the input.

Ok its all appart, but I cant see where it was leaking so i'm just going to replace the front seal and the torque converter, And advice on removing the old front seal?

Looks like I had bent my torque converter? Not sure how that happens, But I did it, and that agitated the seal. Swapped in the torque converter from my `87 cherokee, and got a new input shaft seal. It appears to be fixed, I will have to check it out tomorrow in the light.

Nope, it appears to be good, But as all jeeps are on the way home my idlerpully bearing siezed and cooked my serpentine belt on the masspike. Got that all taken care of and just bent my tie rod. The saga continues
