my 97 2.5 wrangler hesitates everytime i start it. whether its hot or cold. but only for several seconds (15-20). like it wants to stall espiecally when i hit the throttle. but it wont stall. after a few seconds its fine until i shut it off. i can drive forever no problem. but if i shut it off and start it back up 2 seconds later or 2 days later it does it again. every time i start it. i changed plugs, wires, air filter, cap, rotor, oil filter, oil, and cleaned the throttle body. no misfiring, no fouled plugs, no codes. i do have a cracked manifold, but that cant cause it. i called a dealer and explained it to them they said it probably needs a fuel rail  . which makes no sense because mine aint leaking at all. and someone else suggested a intake gasket or head gasket. but the intake gasket would expand when hot so you wouldn't get the same result hot and cold. and the head gasket....well im not losing and oil or antifreeze and it isnt mixing. so i dont think so. i'm hoping this has happened to someone here. and someone can enlighten me. any advise would be greatly appreciated.

KK heres my 2 pennies...Does jeep smoke when first starting? I'm thinking maybe your oil return lines are clogging in head..its an aging 87...During startup any trapped oil maybe going into cylinder thru valveguides giving you rough starts. Burns quickly & runs fine. Just a thought & really no big problem. My RX-8's freekin WEINKEL is designed to burn oil....sheesh. Let jeep sit for a bit & have someone start for u & see if your getting abit of smoke & smell it...dont inhale ;D

its a 97. and it dont smoke. if it smoked i would be burning oil, thus losing oil. i dont lose any fluids or burn them for that matter. thanx for the reply though.

My buddys jeep had a vacume leak which was causing hesitation. Do you still have good vacume pressure?

I didn't notice a new fuel filter in that last of parts...
Cheap, easy to replace.
Could be that, could be a tired fuel pump (should be located in-tank), could be a blocked fuel pump sock.
Have you checked your fuel pressure at the rail? You can find a gauge to connect to it and it will tell you what pressure you are getting at the rail. Consult the Repair manual for the correct pressure readings.

IAC motor is junk, they usually last longer than that but thats most likely what it is.

fuel filter is in the fuel pump. i was thinking about it also. just delaying pulling the tank until i change my manifold and intake gasket.

fuel filter is in the fuel pump. There is no external fuel filter on a 2.5 TJ? Weird. Every other fuel-injected vehicle I've owned has 2 filters...one in the tank (the sock), then another in-line between the tank and the motor.

is it a hesitation or bogging out? do you have tbi, true tbi or real fuel injectors. if your tps is off then perhaps on cold starts or repeated starts it could be an issue. it does sound like you have a fuel related issue tho. have you run cleaner thru the injectors? are they clean, and in proper working order? sounds like it could also be a map sensor as well. there are a lot of things that can go wrong with todays electronicaly governed motors. i might suggest , as much as we hate to bring our vehicles to the shop. have a dealer conect a computer to the vehicle and perform some onboard electronic diagnostics to see if the engine throws a code. it is hard to diagnose the issue over the computer. good luck jeepinagain
