I have a 90 cherokee with the 4.0, stick, but the transfer case wont go into 4LO and the 4HI disengages when ever it feels like. So my question is will the transfer case out of my 90 Laredo (auto) fit into a standard? are they the same? if not by any chance is the transfer case from a 91 Laredo Hi Output (yet again auto) the same? (the list of jeeps in the yard grows....) This whole rear wheel driveing the snow is startin to piss me off and i need to do suttin about it. Anyone know?

Sounds like you may need to simply adjust the shift linkage on the tcase.
Also both jeeps should use a np231 Input may be a differant length however.

just check the spline count,,,im on too slow of internet to check the year break. but the input shaft length is the same to my recallection 92% sure its a straight swap

the input spline count on the two cases will be different, it is not too hard to change input shafts between the two.

I still am going on it bieng a shift linkage problem. Or a broken chain. Either of which is easier to fix than swapping a case.

but that wud explain it coming out of 4HI? the light goesoffand on and it keeps disengagin

Stopped by Jay's today and checked out his jeep. The Tcase is locking the front driveshaft when placed in 4wd, however the vacume disconnect is not engaging the axle. I suggested he started by replacing the vacume shift motor with the known working one.
Since I have never owned a vehicle with a vac disconnect are there any other handy troubleshooting tips people have laying around?

is there a vaccum line leak that is causing this? he could get posi lock or TJ shafts? just some ideas! but im sure you already knew this! !

I think budget dictates he just fix the axle with parts he already has, just need to know what else commonly goes wrong.

Hopefully it is the linkage man for you, I just got my jeep back because my synchro fork had cracked and ripped off inside the case and took out two gears with it, Total damage 1036. and that was with free labor to take it out and put it in. Sucked, big time but i could not deal with out 4 wheel drive Only in A Orange YJ
