I'm overheating of late- not spiking, but generally rising temp and tops out around 250. As soon as I get some air thru the rad, it cools down. which leads me to beleive its a fan clutch issue, possibly water pump. Any experience in this area (liitlered- i think you had a similar prob). Figure if I'm gonna change the fan clutch, might as well do a high-flow water pump whilst I'm at it.
Any thoughts?

I had a similar problem, my radiator was clogged with mud, and my fan clutch was going. pull your radiator out, and clean it out. also, grab your fan (preferrably when it is not spinning ) and wiggle it (not spinning, wiggle it as if you were trying to pull it straight out of the engine), if it has any play in it, it is probably bad.

You dont have to take your radiator out. Run your motor to normal operation temperature and turn the heat on. Your thermostat will be open. Shut your motor off. Be very carefull and open the bottom drain plug on the radiator. It may ever be better to take it out, if you do have a bunch of junk built up in your cooling system. After what is in there has drained out, take th cap off the radiator and stick a garden hose in it and turn on the water and let everything flush out of the cooling system. Could even try replacing your thermostat, it may be getting clogged and stuck.

I agree on electric, I just wired up an override on my electric fan so I can turn it on at will. (I know you dont have one but you could mount one on the front of the radiator. Someone in our club has that setup on a rubi.

Step by step approach. 1. check coolant level & condition..ie dirty/old.. 2. check yer water pump belt. 3. remove rad cap (cold engine) start engine & observe water flow when engine is warm. 4. observe fan whilst running ie wobbly/noisy Results; If step 1 bad easy fix add/replace coolant...might as wel flush system. If step 2 bad replace belt. If step 3 bad change thermostat 1 & then water pump to fix. If step 4 bad change fan/pump Good luck.

you dont want anything mounted to the front..the more you have in the way, the less air passes throw. the only reson it should be in the front is if you have a lack of space. loose the stock power robbing fan and put in an eletric...id wire it with a relay and give it key on power with a witch in parilel so you can shut off if you want.. just my 2 bucks..do what you want

draining your coolant will have no effect on your overheating problem, unless by some miracle you were able to get mud into your closed cooling system. I meant take the radiator out, and clean the mud out of the fins. on the EXTERIOR of the radiator.
and I am the one who has the electric fan mounted on the front of my radiator. I did that because I did not want to rely solely on an electric. If I do a water crossing, and forget to shut it off, and the motor gets soaked, or if it just plain fails... I don't want to have a jeep that has NO fan at all. that is why I installed an AUX electric pusher fan. to help while offroading. and it does not block any air, my jeep runs fine with the winch and fan in front of the radiator. if anything, they keep the mud from flying into my radiator from the front.

John,
I took my radiator out after the April 9th run and blew all the crap out of the radiator. At the same time, i also took out my clutch fan and put in an electric fan (which still isn't hooked up) and a 190 degree thermo. I haven't had a problem overheating since and I don't even have the fan hooked up.
Granted, a lot of the driving i do is highway, but there have been times ive been sittin in traffic and the thermo has moved.
don't worry, i'm planning on hooking up the electric fan this weekend. I haven't had time to do it lately.

i went to Consumer Auto Parts and bought a brand new one for like $70. I think it was like another $10 or 15 for all the wiring and switches.....but i got the nice switches.
ill have pics up at the end of this weekend. I'm doing the wiring on friday with ar4ce.

I need to get my a** in gear and take some pics. I got the fan for xmas, it was about $70-80 at indy auto. The switch was a few bucks, I needed a cool one with an LED on it ;D the wiring and relay... My toolbox has plenty in it!
