My 4wd doesn't work. It seems like the 4wd enguages but it doesn't actually enguage. The 4 wheel low when enguaged doesn't change the gear ratio. It just seems to stay in 2wd. This couldn't have happened at a worse time. I checked the linkage from the lever to the case and it seems to be working fine. PLEASE HELP.

i was gonna say it sounds like you have snow in the shifter linkage but your all over that.

I think I still have vaccum lines. It didn't work all day so I thought that it was the shifter fork but now all of a sudden it just started working. WTF is going on with the transfer case? Does anyone know why the 4wd light blinks sometimes? It blinks and almost feels like it is going in and out of 4wd.

do you have a body lift or TC drop? MML? you may need to adjust your linkage. it may not be fully engaging. i hadthis problem once, after i installed the body lift. i had to keep adjusting how far the shifter had to go to lock into 4hi and 4lo and coincide w/ the bracket that holds the shifter.

I do have a transfer case drop from the lift. I'll look into that adjustment.

I had a strange thing happen to my Rubicon on my last outing with a few friends. This was a tuff run because of the ice we encountered. First off I drove there (western MA) through a snowstorm. The very first hill was iced up and I tried to crawl up with the lockers engaged. After several tries I needed to back down the hill to get a running start. When I put it in reverse, I went nowhere. I could hear the T-Case spinning but no power to the wheels. Hummm…interesting. I thought for sure I had broken something. After putting it in and out of 4x4 low several times, it started working and worked well for the rest of the trail. It has not happened again but I haven’t been off road with it lately. I have tested it a few times and it seems fine. Go figure. Anyway the bottom line to me is; ice can do strange things to T-Cases and from what I have read, yours is back to normal. If it happens again I would be concerned but if not you are more than likely fine.

Might want to put some ATF in there, does sond like a shift fork is sticking.
Also don't feel bad I had no 4wd either, but my issue is with the vacuum system. here is the easiest way to tell the different between the two.
I the 4wd light comes on, and no matter what selection onthe tcase you use, 2wd high, it is you tcase
if the light does not come on, and all the tcase selections work, but only with 2wd, it is you axle!

Thanks guys. I tried the 4wd again today and it is doing fine. I guess it was a freak thing, well hopefully. John atf? is that automatic transmission fluid? What will that do if I add it? And how much should I add?

Jeepfan,
Forgive me cause I don’t know your year jeep. I’m gonna assume it’s a TJ. The newer ones take ATF 4, which is Automatic Transmission Fluid. Your owner’s manual should tell you what to use. To check it, you will see two bolts in the rear of your T-Case. The bottom one is for draining and the upper is for filling. Just take out the upper and if no fluid starts to seep out, put your finger in and try to feel the level of the fluid. If it’s low, put in some until it begins to overflow.
All you need to do is find out what you use. I hope this helps.
