Another thread asked the question about K&N Air Filters being good or bad for off-road vehicles. I was considering this purchase but wanted to hear everyone's thoughts.
Obviously there will be some opinions on both sides but if I see a vast majority one way or the other it will give me a good idea which way to go.

i have the k&n fipk for my v8, and only good things to say, a little more power, especially on the highway, and as long as you keep it lubed it works great.

At my work a couple of the guys have race cars and they say by lubing the k+n filters actually allows more crap to go through the filter, not just air but dirt/dust. They keep their filters well cleaned but dont use the lube. They also said by not using the lube you dont loose any power or response as if it was lubed.

for street and performance its hard to beat a K&N filter, but for offroad vehicles that see alot of dusty trail miles, they are abosuletely horrible. they are a high flow filter and there fore they allow the small particles thru and only capture the big ones. there fore all the fine dust and crap that goes thru the filter gets into your intake and motor. now think about all the dirt and crap that gets kicked up infront of you while on the trail....do you want that in your engine.
i like the fram/stock filter cause it has the prefilter foam thingy on it that blocks all the crap out...o yeah and the jeeps intake actually provides more air in the stock format than the motor can handle, so i hate to burst your bubble on better performance, but its not really there.

Well i was personally shocked when someone told me that they are bad for Jeeping because they let in more particles then the leading filter. Now if i'm not mistaken they are supposed to let in even less particles and they are supposed to increase the horse power because they let in more air.
Now away from the mumbo-jumbo and on to the personal experience.
I just bought a Jeep about 4 months ago and the first thing i did was put in a K&N. Now almost immediately i noticed a difference. I noticed that there was a little more power and more importantly i was getting about an extra 1/2 to 1 MPG.
So if you are deciding on whether or not to get one. GET ONE because i've never heard anything bad about them (minuse the one above) and everyone i know who has one swears by them. Myself included.

Everyone "knows" someone who didn't like something for some reason or another... Personal experience: I have used K&N filters for a long time. They work well AND filter well. Follow the instructions for oiling (running without oil allows particles to pass through) and cleaning intervals. www.knfilters.com/facts.htm

I agree. Seems somebody got it backwards. If you DONT oil filter it'll let more particles thru filter. Downside to oiling filter is it'll trap all those small dust/dirt particles & therefore need cleaning/re-oiling all the more frequent due to off road use. Seems from the amount of muddy Jeeps on the road aint many of us washing our rides...(Muddy Badge of Honor perhaps?)...so you should have the time to clean yer air filter ;D oh yeah...& no 1 will know you cleaned it if u leave the exterior mud in place Theres an idea...Mud in a can...for all those poser wanna B's ;D

The point of the filter of being in a conical shape and not in the box is surface volume, the more surface that can draw air the better. As far as it's ability to filter small particles there is probably some truth to that which is why they make a pre-filter sock that goes over the filter for extra dusty conditions.
