Since me moving to PA, I'm going through crap with my relocation company . They want me to replace the roof and right here at Christmas time, this is not good. Anyone know a cheap contractor that could do the work? I'm also thinking about coming up this weekend and possibly doing the work myself. Anyone have any experience that is available to help? No definite plans yet, just trying to see what's available.

Thanks Chuck, we're going to call Johnny today.
So, is this not a job I should do myself? We're looking for the cheapest roof we can get.
mprayii-I think that option would just delay the process and cause more stress than we have already been through with this house.

it is a DIY if you want, you will need to pull up one of the bottom course of shingles (not the very bottom) and see how many layers there are, if there is another layer under the exhisting shingles, you need to strip the roof and start from scatch.
Now here is my personal opinion (and I am assuming this is your old house) if there are 4 layers of shingls underniether, throw the new shingles over hem, you don live there. first course gets put on the bottom upside-down and and reversed, then lay another course in regular fashion over them, and then work your way to the top. if you don;t have a good eye for level, use ledger boards.

it is against the building code to lay more than 2 layers of shingles on a roof. meaning original shingle sand then 20 yrs later second layer 20 yrs after that rip and start over.
how did calling that guy work out?

There are already 2 layers on the roof, so it will have to be stripped and reshingled. We talked with Johnny today and he is supposed to head out to the house tomorrow to take a look at it.

I didn't know it was code to only have two layers, I thought it was just common practice.
Roof scraper, a couple buddies and a bunch of 30 packs make stripping the roof an easier job.

you know i am a contractor, right? I knew you did something of the sorts but wasn't quite sure what it was. When I posted the question, I was hoping you would chime in simply for the advice of the experienced. I'll send you a PM later tonight or call me when you get a minute.
