Not at all. In completely stock form, a hummer is far better in a military situation. as for a every day driver, weekend warrior off roader, cost effective transportation, the jeep has it all.
Now if you talking the H2 that is nothing more than a over glorified and overpriced Tahoe with some skid plates and a bigger rear end (the tahoe is a 12 bolt and the hummer uses the 2500's corporate 14 bolt)
Hummers are great for what they are designed for, I have wheeled with Hummers and jeeps alike, and they both have advantages and disadvantages, But i doubt people want me to type for the next three hour comparing the two.

I am dumb, I miss read the question, I thought this was one of those which is better questions!
I believe the first humvies came about in expiramental mode in 1979 for the military (tech. called HMMWV high mobility multi-purpose wheeled vehicle) I think both a company called Telledyne and ChryslerDefence had the humvies in development Telledyne's project was based on the lamborginie cheetah. Am General released it's design sometime in either 80 or 81 as a assault vehicle and a troop carrier. 83, AM general won the proposal and rolled 55,000 give or take off of it's production line.
The hummer didn't come about until 1992 when GM bough interest in AM general and wanted to push for the civilan model which is known as Hummer.
Now for the question. Chrysler's designs were based on jeep's and also on the 3/4 and 1 ton service trucks. But at the time (~1979-1980) jeeps were still produced by AMC. Now whether AM general use a jeep in it's design, I honestly don't know.
I bet your wondering how I know this? My father is buying a hummer (97 soft top) in a couple months (post mid life crisis-crisis) and we have been researching them for years, trying to pick out the model which best suits him. He has been obsesed with the H1 since 1989 when they started showing up at the military base in wakefield, (now de-activated Camp Curtis Guild)

I didn't know that AM general was a smaller part of AMC.
Not to be a little snot, but... the HMMWV is not a hummer, or vice versa, they only share similar bodies and concept. Everything else is different(motor tranny, suspension etc). also a hummer is a brain child of the boys over at GM. the HMMWV was based on the cheetah and is pure am general. Now if this is a lesson in geneology. the HMMWV I guess could be technically a Jeep (Fourth cousin twice removed) But the Hummer would not. When the hummer Debut in 92, AMC was long forgotten, and was not produced by a jeep company.
Am I reading into this way too much?
Now did Jeep ever make a motorcycle?
I was reading a article in American Thunder (a New NASCAR mag) and I guess back in the late 70's AMC bought up what was left of Norton Cycles INC. and for 5 glorious year made the worse Norton Motorcycles ever.

Why does everyone dump on the H2?Iknow its a yuppie status mobile but does that dimminish its offroad capability. From what I have read of them they are quite capable, and so what if it is a hodge podge of GM parts ie.tahoe frame, 2500 springs,14 bolt rear(locked),35 inch BFGs.Sounds to me that for a stock rig it should do pretty good, not trying to stir it up just trying to keep an open mind.

Good God Man that broke way too easy. Hell that was the size of an average speed bump. I know they are great military vehicles, but I just don't understand the draw for them outside of the military. And that video just shows that they probably weren't designed for anything but flat trails. I definetly don't think that they can compete even with a stock jeep.

Erik I agree, but the H2 was born out of the desire to turn the hummer into a poosley poosley civilian style SUV so I group all the civilian Hummers together. The original civilian HMMWV was an impractacle DD, and as that video shows the H2 sucks off road

BigMikaele, you are making a HUGE mistake then. The civilian Hummer is the equal of the HMMWV. Lumping them together is like calling apples oranges and vice versa. Erik I agree with you regarding the capabilities of the H1. All I am stating is that I can't understand the draw to have one as a DD. Having had to drive one every day it sucks as a civilian vehicle. I mean for what it was designed for (drive anywhere while having the ability to resist small arms fire, survive heavy drop insertion, continue driving even with all 4 tires shot out and be a multi-dimentional combat platform) they are not things I look for in a civilian vehicle. Maybe I'm just overly biased against them as a civilian vehicle due to their impractacality and as they become more practacle, lower off-road capability. I'll shut up now .

OK then I guess Im convinced H2s suck ;D but bigger than an H1? The accual body is larger, the H1 has more ground cleaence though, and slightly larger foot print.

Nope. that is illegal/private land that they were on. Would love to have showed them up, but couldn't.
I am wondering what kind of repercussions are going to rear their ugly head on this one. This will give a little more ammo to those who want to end the hobby as it is!
