I'm thinking of making a skid plate to replace my t-case skid that starts in the back of the t-case and goes all the way up to the bottom of my front bumper. Does anyone feel like teaching me how to weld and helping me find some steel to do this? Also, does anyone have any idea what the cost of this would be and what the specs would look like?
I have no idea, but I just keep looking at engine skids and from what I can tell, I can get an engine skid or replace my t-case skid and build a large skid for about the same price.

Keep in mind when you do that, you'll need to make sure that your driveshaft has plenty of room to move. Also, if you make it all the way to the bumper, you have a lot of steering components to avoid, especially when wheeling and articulating the axle. I've heard of people doing this before and it's not a quick project. I'm sure you konw that but just be sure you know what you're getting into. Also, I don't know anything about your jeep but make sure if you are going to use it to push the TC up you're SYE'd (i'm sure you knew that). Finding steel won't be hard... just google it. You can find a ton of iron works places that might even have enough to give you scrap. Also, if you do this, make a cardboard / sheet metal stencil of it. I bet a good group of people would be very interested in making themselves one if you do all the hard work I've only welded 2 times so I wouldn't be much of a help. Just the FYI, goodl luck

Thanks for the info and I don't think I'm going all the way to the bumper for that exact reason. I think I want to just create an engine/t-case skid that's one and all mounts together. That way I don't have to mess with the drive shaft or the whole mess of parts on the front end.

Don't forget that theres more to it than flat steel. You need gusseting for strength. Not as cheap or as fun as building your own, but I'm really happy with my Jeep Medic Fabrication engine and tranny skids. www.jeepmedicfabrication.com/products%20page.htm

Just buy one. It will be cheaper in the end, trust me!!
Also it takes alot of time and energy to make something like that up . . . not sure if you realize how much work it actually is.

X2, with the current price of steel, we all can't geta 36"x36" sheet of 1/4 for $30. Also, I would love to teach you to weld, Mig welding is so easy any GED drop out could do it.... But to build the skid you describe would be; 1. Waste of money 2. Way the f*** too heavy 3. way too excessive 4. Way too long to build 5. Lastly way too f*** heavy you really only need to armor from Front LCA mount to rear LCA mount. small clearences for your D/S and be done. Gussets are needed, but I have found carfully laid pieces of 1x1x3/16 Angle welded on the under side to be good support. I am designing my Skid, I will post up the drafts when I learn how to put them on the internetthingy.
