How much and how long would I be looking at if I did a V8 swap when I get back to boston? Anyone have any experience?
The idea of tearing apart my motor and shelling out cash has me thinking about bigger and better options.
shipping on this head is going to kill me- maybe waiting is in order.

I think you should look into the Hemi conversion kit. I'm not sure how much it costs, but i'm thinking it would cost a few to many thousands.

I'll be honest- If I could, I'd sent it to AEV to get a Hemi. Buuuut, they only do 2003+ TJs. I would take a loan for that. I would love to do a grand cherokee V8- the one in the WJ we just bought is great. I woulndt even mind having a slushbox auto. Just wondering if in the long run it might be more worth my while........ If I do it, anyone want to help?

I would help with comic relief along with beer runs. not much help with motor stuff.

Seems to me like a v8 swap would involve alot of extra work (making it fit, electrical and drivetrain). If you're going to be rebuilding your engine anyways and dont mind spending a few grand you could stroke it? This way you could just bolt the engine back in. Just a thought.

mmagnumpi9 has a great idea. It would cut your work time in half and make everything a lot easier. But, either way i'll give a hand helping out jeepfan555 with the beer runs. I'm not only lacking my expertise in engines, but the majority of life!!

ill just sit there and drink the beer..........
my question is..I know for a fact AEV wranglers are not california emissions legal and I know mass goes by the same laws and limits pretty much....just bringing another idea to the table..emissions testing
but hell if you do it and it works out for ya, im all wrench!!

I would look into the 270 hp stroker v6. Its in a few adds in the back of JP mags. The HEMI conversion is big money.

or 3.7L!
V8 conversion takes time and engineering! I helped to put a 383 into my bud Kevins YJ, it was a complete tear down and re-build of the Jeep. was not too bad, some what straight foward if you keep the Carb. If you go EFI (which if off road, the only way to fly) It will cost more (about $1500 more) but will be easier, painless as well as other companies make plug and play harnesses to put for example a LS6 into a TJ
Re build what you got fast, effective, and cheaper! and while your at it, stroke it if you want. I found areally good sight once where the kid stroked a 4.0 with a custom comp cam, and 4.2L crank, 4.2 pistons, and 4.0 connecting rods (I think) made like 230 Rear wheel horse, no boring was done.

230 to the wheels is pretty inmpressice with no boring. Now think about the possiblities if bored??

since i feel like being the odd ball....go with the diesal they are now throwing in the liberties. just imagine the torque.
but if you do the V8 swap, you are gonna have to worry about new computer and wiring, new tranny, new t-case, which then means new driveshafts and possibly beefier axles. its gonna be alot of money and time. i would just stroke it and be done with it.

i would rebuild the motor stock! and i am not kidding, it would be reliable, and not that expensive.
plus, honestly there is no replacement for diplacement, my friend put a TON of money into his 6cyl and he is not happy with it at all. the performance is not that great and he has been hunting grmlins since the rebuild / performance build. now he is working on swapping in a hemi, and he will do it!
just my .02
