so 4.56 and 34s (TruXus MTs really like a 33.6) would be a nice combo then? stock tires on an XJ (sport) are 225/75r/15 so its a 28.3 3.55 at 60mph with a 28.3" tire gets me 1770rpms 4.56 at 60mph with a 33.6" tire gets me 1915rpms so 145rpm difference is this close enough to stock where I will have good power on road and offroad and still maintain decent gas mileage? Like I said I don't really mind the doggyness of 31s and 3.55s but I'd like for atleast some of it to go away. Also I will need a 38 tooth speedo gear with 4.56s and 34s correct?

my opinion, and this is gonna get a good ripping, but with the 33's and an auto, the 4.56 will be best for close to stock, but with the added tire weight, more wind resistance, and all the other factors associated with a lifted vehicle and highway travel, I think you would be better off with 4.88, your tranny will be less likely to "search" for the correct gear on slight inclines and when accelerating, in turn, allowing the motor to opperate more efficently.
the older your tranny, the more likely it will be searching. (assuming it is not rebuilt)

well I plan on 34" TruXus so I re-did this gearing calc...
(TruXus 34's) with 4.88s and 33.7" tire I will be at 2044rpm at 60mph with 4.56s and 33.7" tire I will be at 1910rpm at 60mph
(TruXus 33's) with 4.88s and 32.7" tire I will be at 2106rpm at 60mph with 4.56s and 32.7" tire I will be at 1968rpm at 60mph
relativly close I guess

go 488 then, when you park your jeep next to one on q's youre gonna say, man my jeep looks small, so you will already have a better gear. and its impossible to tell actual rpm on auto tranny anyway, theres always some fudge factor.

if you still have the D30, 4.88 is as low as you can go in that axle i believe. and since the RPM difference between 4.56 and 4.88 is ~200rpm, I would just assume go 4.88 and have a better crawl ratio.

alright cool so 4.88 it is...now for the question I'm probably going to get flamed on for but...Lets just say I had enough to fund gearing, locker and install for ONE axle. Could I have my rear axle regeared and as long as I don't use 4WD be okay untill I saved the cash for the front to be installed??

do your rear first, and take out your front driveshaft....that way even if you put it in 4wd. you wont screw it up. just in case u forget! and get the itch for low range
what rear end do you have? dont waste your money gearing a junk rear!

gear to whatever feels best on the highway at 65. drive down the highway in 2nd gear and see if you like it, you may!
keep your trail gears in your transfercase. I run 4.11s in my jeep and its perfect on the highway. i wouldnt change it. id like it to crawl better in the woods, so maybe ill do a 4:1.

Frankly 400 for gears 1000 for lockers and 1100 for install is a little rough to drop all at one time for me but I can deal with 2wd for a few months untill I save the cash to do the front... and I have an 29 spline 8.25 but I would like to pick up a 44...I know where there is one I just haven't gotten the chance to grab it.. But so far I've been able to scrap my low pinion D30 for a HP ;D so I;m one step in the right direction. Krome no D35 but will you take the 8.25 housing? ;D shafts and innerds are going to a buddy so I will have an empty 8.25 Andrew

i know that the highest i can go wiht my d30hp is 4.88.....
and to the guy regearing, why not just wait these few months you would be driving on the street to wait and do it all at once, that way you could still wheel during those months and not have a 2wd vehicle during the winter....or maybe just get cheaper lockers? mine is locked front and rear for 300 bucks, if your on a budget there are cheaper way to do things
