First off sorry for another gearing question but I need some answers...I realize that 4.56s and 33s go hand and hand and 4.88s and 35s are about right...As of now I'm sitting at around 5" of lift running 31s. I'd like to start saving now for gearing as it is inevitable. Heres what I'm planning 4.56s, Detroit rear, open front(for now), and 33s. I figure at 5" I should be able to run 33s nicely with minor trimming. Another side of me is saying go with 4.88s in case somewhere down the line I start feeling my Jeep is to small again and I want 34s/35s...For some reason though I am paranoid about geaing though..I've been in Dans I've driven on the highway behind Dan and still 4.88s creep me out. He does a lot of highway driving so I asked him and he said its fine but (heres my questions) How would 33s and 4.88s be? How would 34s and 4.56s be? If I had 33s and 4.88s could I maintain 65-70mph without taching out? Gas mileage doesn't truly bother me since I purchased a rolling cinderblock with a gas thirsty I6 in it but I'd like to get maybe 12 or 14 anything less and I might as well be driving a Ford Excursion or an Abrhams Tank

forgot to add specs 4.0 AW4 NP231
and also I have recieved a set of barely used 4.56s for my D30 from a buddy so thats why I originally wanted to regear the rear to 4.56 but will I benefit anything from 33s and 4.88s?

i run 4:56's with 36" swampers with no overdrive and turn about 2200 rpm at 60mph really not that bad. spec's on my cj are 258,t18(1 to 1 -4th gear) my 258 doesn't like to rev past 3200 rpm

I run a 4.0L aw4 with 4.88's and 33's I generally cruise at 2500-2700 on the highway once in a while as high as 3k. Only thing i would say is make sure your driveshafts are balanced well.

Thank you but see heres the thing I have read all the gearing threads and what not but get so many different ideas and opinions its nuts... some say 33s and 4.56s are doggy some say its fine, some say its better then stock blah blah blah... I'm thinking 4.56 will be fine though and 33s is all I will run. And if I want to go bigger how bad can 4.56s and 34s/35s be?? Is it worse then running 31s and 3:55s?

ive read that 4.56 and 35s is close to stock, and that using 4.88 and 35s is a little lower than stock. everyone has their own ideas of the matter, and all i can really offer in terms of help was the link on naxja. im going to be in the same boat as you in a year or two though.

i would plan on 4.88's and 34's. a 34" tire is going to be closer to an actual 33" tall, and hell why not, price isnt going to be much different, and you can brag for being that much better. also, over gearing a bit can keep you from pressing the pedal so hard which is the real mileage killer. i try to downshift my yj on 33's instead of mashing the pedal to the floor, and my unadjusted mileage with a 4.0 is around 16 mpg. so if you go with 4.88's and 34's, youll be great on the highway and a bit slower on the trail.

so if you go with 4.88's and 34's, youll be great on the highway and a bit slower on the trail. slower as in good or slow as in bad? sorry I just don't understand gearing really. this calculator shows that with a 34 I'll be slightly higher then stock so does that mean I will have sufficient power on the road and doing better gas mileage wise??

Shoot to get it back close to stock. Unless its a trail vehicle, then go as deep as you possibly can.

stock=all around best performance if your within a couple hundred rpm's of stock, it will act just like it was when it was stock. if you go to a lower gear(numerically higher) you will run higher rpms on highway have more power but at the cost of mpg. you will also have a lower gear, in 4lo this will give you more control, you wont have to push the right pedal as far to reach higher rpms, to get over obstacles, and when you go downhill the gear will help you slow down as well. if this is a street rig go with close to stock, if it is a sometime wheeler go down 1 gear, if its just a wheeler. f*** it and go with 5:13 4.56 w/35's will be close to stock, best gas 4.88 w/35's will give you more power,better wheelin, less gas 4.56w/33 over stock, more power less gas 4.88/w33 way over great offroad f*** highway, but doable just not that fast.

so 4.56 and 34s (TruXus MTs really like a 33.6) would be a nice combo then?
stock tires on an XJ (sport) are 225/75r/15 so its a 28.3 3.55 at 60mph with a 28.3" tire gets me 1770rpms 4.56 at 60mph with a 33.6" tire gets me 1915rpms so 145rpm difference is this close enough to stock where I will have good power on road and offroad and still maintain decent gas mileage? Like I said I don't really mind the doggyness of 31s and 3.55s but I'd like for atleast some of it to go away.

I get 15-16mpg if I drive nice with my rig 4.88's and 33's Only problem is i get driveshaft vibrations beacuse it spins so fast.
