My 2000 TJ is possessed.
When starting it, either cold or warm (doesnt matter) it acted like it was dead, clicking of the starter, lights dimming etc etc... and then... BING! All lights were bright and the engine kicked over, a jump would get it running too, but not always nessassary.
Confused? Theres more....
So, only occasionally after getting it started this happens:
Runs great while moving no problems, but when comming to a complete stop, it trys to stall, so I have to keep it reving.
Now I had the origonal battery in it, so I replaced that a few days ago, and everything seems to be working great..
Untill two days ago, the hard starts came back and the stalling at idle, though not as persistant as it was. And to top things off an new problem has occured! The "Check Gauges Light" came on today, and I noticed my Voltage guage was pegged to the right 19+ volts.
So I have parked my jeep and decided to research and fix my problem.
So I have a new battery.
Research says, it could be the Generator (TJ's dont use alternators...)
Could be the Voltage Regulator, which is located in the PCM/ECU (pick one). Lucky me.
What do you guys think? Also I gathered the above info from jeepforum, is it right?

I would def think it would be the voltage regulator. That stinks that its in the pcm, can a dealership flash it?

I dont know what a dealership can do...
If it is my ECU/PCM is there a place to get a "modified/aftermarket" one? Seeing as they arent "normally" much more than a new one..

Are you sure there isnt a voltage regulator on your alternator? Might want to take visual look and see. Seems very stupid to integrate that into an ecu.

I used to have a 95 pathfinder, that I lifted 6". I liked it alot, but anyways. The voltage regulator went on that one day, and all of asudden it shot the volt gauage all the way up, turned on the check engine light, check guages light, and for some reason it even turn on the trans temperature warning light. The voltage regulator on those is on the alternator, which just gives it an easy swap of an alt and its fixed. So you may wanna check it like blue rocket said. Do you still have any kind of warrenty on your TJ?

I heard of there being some federal mandated 7 year 70,000 mile waranty on anything emissions related, and heard of this guy who had his ecu replaced for 54 dollars at the dealership because of this same problem... My Jeep has 84,000 miles, so unless its a 10 year 100,000 mile warranty im up the creek..

I agree with you, and Ill have to check, but after about 3 hours of reading my search results on jeepforum last night, I am pretty sure thats where it is.... unfortunately.

Did you try cleaning the wire connections. Buy a battery post cleaner, Clean those and look at the other connections by the alternator. Get a wire brush and clean everything, see if that helps.

whats your volt meter on thedash doing befor it stalls, does the amp or battery light come on, if you dont trust the dash then test the out put of your alt "generator=\" with a volt meter and see what it puts out..then find someone with an amp clamp and see what it puts out for amps

I had some things like that happen with my Grand Cherokee. I had a bad battery. It effected a lot of things, like my gauges and it ran like sh't. The computer in the new Jeeps are funny, they do not like low voltage. It sounds like your alternater maybe going . Which make sence when your at idal you are not producing enough voltage and it will stall nad when you put a new battery in it ran good untill the battery got low on voltage. That is one thing that is not great on the newer Jeep is the computer running on low voltage. Which now you really have to make sure that your battery and alterater is in good shape before wheeling.

it must be because you dont have 33s yet?
lol you sure the new battery isnt a "bad" battery, could be a bad cell?
other guess would be alternator, any noise from alt, possible bearing gone? overcharging could be result of a bad alternator, even though its more common to have it undercharge
i cant believe the voltage regulator is in the ecu?
check your terminals like 100 times over, the little things are sometimes the worst things!

I cut off the battery terminals and installed new ones, during the process the wire that goes from the battery to the fuse box under the hood was all corroded and green.. I cut off all the crappy wire, and in stalled the new connectors. It works fine again... for now...
I took it to Autozone, and had them run some tests.
Volt Regulator is fine. Battery is fine. Alternator at 2000 rpm is only producing 6.6 volts.
Time to get a new alternator I guess.
